Official November Shutdown Thread

I'm sure this sounds great to you, but there would be thousands of federal workers that do not make as much, often getting by paycheck to paycheck. They would not be able to afford food for their families, much less gifts for their children.

And perhaps you're thinking of travel since hey why not if you can't go to work plus it's the holidays, but you will be stuck. The airports will be a HUGE mess between TSA agents, CBP agents, and FAA workers calling out.

I'm picturing a disaster if the gov't shuts down in November.

PP never said it would be great. You’re reading into what they said.

For low GS feds, PenFed is open to all feds and you can switch your direct deposit there so they will give you your pay on time as a zero interest loan. Now you have plenty of time to set that up. No whining.

Not open to all Feds, but USAA does the same.

No, it's not going to happen.

At this point, McCarthy has cast his lot with moderate Republicans and moderate Democrats. So, just like he worked out the bipartisan deal for the CR, he'll do a bipartisan deal for full-year appropriations. He'll bargain and give the Democrats slightly more of what they want than what the moderate Republicans want in exchange for keeping his speakership. The Democrats know that they will never be able to get Jeffries as speaker, so having a moderate Republican who is willing to deal with them is far better than any candidate that Gaetz and the HFC will be able to suggest.

As this point, McCarthy sold his soul to bury the HFC. The HFC is done pulling strings now and the Democrats will get a lot more concessions than they would have ever gotten had the Gaetz and company not sabotaged the Republican party with their party civil war. Had they stuck with McCarthy, they would have gotten a lot more Republican and conservative packages and concessions pushed through, but Gaetz gambled that McCarthy would cave to him and HFC lost. Big.

What is the HFC?

House Freedom Caucus probably.

It's not gonna happen. Everybody blinked with this one. They won't get this close next time.

I hear you and that’s what sucks about a CR.

I can’t go through it again, either. I remember back in 2018 when they passed the CR, saying to DH, “they’ll never shut down before Christmas!” Lo and behold, they did. I guess we’ll see this time around.

Not helpful for contractors who won't see back pay.

Navy Federal as well. We switched after the 2018-2019 shutdown, which scared the cr@p out of me.

Or do I get an extension on them if a Shutdown prevents me from taking leave? (very likely I would be furloughed)

you should start taking days. if there ends up being another furlough, you may get some of the scheduled leave restored, but that's a whole process and isn't necessarily guaranteed. also your supervisor may not approve a big chunk of leave in the last pay period if you haven't already scheduled it.

if your agency has a leave bank, you should join it during open season. you can always donate use-or-lose leave rather than lose it, and it helps if you get into a bad health situation in the future.

Me neither. I just wanted a few days to not have to deal with an exhausting colleague. I'm sure this person will be sending me 10 emails tomorrow morning.

Is a leave bank different from the Voluntary Leave Transfer Program?

This. If they got to a CR in October, there's no reason they can't in November. The 2018 shutdown was a Trump anomaly that no one expected even the day or so before it happened.

That’s because people became political at the end. Please keep this to job predictions and agency news. Thanks.

I don't know how you keep this thread non-political when any truly relevant news won't come out for at least a month.
