Widespread looting in Philadelphia right now

WTF? This is crazy. All the people arrested and released will be looting again tonight, and tomorrow, and the next day.
We need more prisons. Honestly, that's the only solution at this point. This entire population of criminals should be swept up and locked away. They have no value-add to society.

It's called BAIL. Welcome to reality. This is not new. This is not exclusive to any political party.

But setting a low ball bail is exclusive to certain ideologies. Set that crap sky high and let them sit.

Do you support Donald Trump sitting his conditional-violating butt in jail till his trials, or is your hatred exclusively for Black people?

Well in America, we have this concept called "innocent until proven guilty," which requires you to have something called a "trial" to determine what we call "guilt." Until then, they are not "criminals," as they have not been convicted of any crime.

I'm not sure how you have gone this long not knowing these very basic concepts, perhaps you are new to our country? If so, maybe consider relocating to a country that better reflects your values, where indiscriminate and indefinite detention without a trial is normal. I'd suggest North Korea.

Yeah, this is stupid. They are all on video looting, stealing, vandalizing and committing crimes. All were arrested while trying to escape stores with goods in hand. The above sentiment is why a) crime continues and b) criminals are often repeat offenders. Lock them up. Throw away the key. We do not need these people on the streets, as they are a danger to our communities.

No actually the foundation of law is not stupid in any way. Just because you don/t comprehend the how and why does not mean that we should summarily imprison people wtf. That is authoritarianism.

This is where the left sounds insane. No, it is not authoritarianism to jail known criminals apprehended in the act of committing a crime. These are not innocent, do-gooders. These are bad actors who on the whole have achieved billions of dollars in damages to retails institutions, many of which are now shutting permanently in certain neighborhoods. It is completely insane to me that the left are screaming that we cannot imprison criminals any more. Our cities are going to dog poo. Crime is up by over 40-50% in many places. This is not just petty left but VIOLENT crimes, including assaults, rapes, and murders, and your response is "WAAAH, we cannot jail thugs apprehended mid-crime because it is too authoritarian".

Dems have lost the plot. Sit this one out, and let the rest of us try to regain a safer country.

It's not about being a bleeding heart, it's about understanding human behavior and seeing things as they really are. People who don't have much to lose become extremely violent.

And? When they are extremely violent they don't belong on the streets. I honestly do not care how they got to that point but I'm not about to let innocent people get shot or robbed of their livelihoods because of violent criminals. Dems are too busy talking about the "why" that they skip understanding that we need severe enforcement mechanisms now. It won't make you feel better knowing that your loved one was shot by someone who "didn't have much to lose". Dems will lose this election cycle and next if they cannot figure out how to combat crime. Right now, that is my #1 issue and I, like PP above, am a NPR donating, public school supporting, liberal who has spent my whole life working in liberal fields.

Serious question, how many inmates are you willing to house and feed? The average cost per inmate is $130,000 per year.

Why feed and house inmates at $130K? That's a waste of money and resources. Build a mega prison with cheap overhead and throw them in there. There's no reason to spend any money on these folks when there's no return on investment. And we can stop death penalty appeals. That is a time suck.

I get that you don’t care about that, but I assume you care about your money. How much are you willing to spend on this? It’s 130k per inmate right now.

Please don’t tell me you are one of those who also wants low low taxes.

That would be considerable cheaper. I doubt this is their first merry-go-round. These are likely juveniles on their 4th, 5th, + criminal incident with no future prospects. We do not need them. What we do need are more mega prisons. Make them for profit if needed. Prison labor can be used for hire to make it self sustaining. There's got to be a solution because they do not belong in society. We cannot put retailers or services in low income communities because the people that live there with rob and loot these very institutions. They continue to dig their own graves.

Here's the rub. I'm not a R. Never voted R in my life. Dems are also sick of the crime. We're done. The idea that only Republicans hate criminals is ridiculous, and why we're in the mess that we see now. You want to die on your hill with urban crime, fine. But the rest of us will be moving away from crime and to the suburbs. Inner cities like Philly are in total ruin.

Hi, I live in SE dc and my brain is not Fox News-addled. I understand right wing propaganda and loathe it.

At the same time, crime is up by double digits.

There are seemingly a few camps to this crime discussion. Especially, as it relates to looting.

There are those who somehow justify theft because they don’t like corporations, price gouging, inequitable CEO pay and what have you. They also decry poverty and can somehow reason that even if theft is causing stores to close it’s justified for survival, and many of these folks believe this theft is actually corporate propaganda on the airwaves used to punish normal people and the theft isn’t the real reason stores are actually closing, but it’s based more on corporatist reasons.

There there are hardline folks who lean authortarian anyway and want a crack down no matter what. These folks suck up Fox News.

Then there are people like me who have kids, live in the city and don’t want my stupid local CVS on 12th st se to close because I know this type of theft and crime is actually happening. I am also liberal, but getting incredibly frustrated with crime apologists. It’s not cool. You don’t look like an ally or whatever. You look like an aszhole. You are jeopardizing my safety and you are causing business to close.

I'm not saying that the idea that only Republicans hate criminals is ridiculous. I'm calling the PP's support of putting criminals in concentration camps and gassing them ridiculous. How is this even controversial?

No this is a terrifying glimpse into the dark depths of the human mind. Look at these people willing to build concentration camps, forced labor and death because they are disturbed by a looted Athleta store. They think they are less violent than looters or thieves because they will use official structures to commit their violence. They are also too dumb to understand where that leads.

If you aren’t going to bother educating yourself about the reality of the legal and incarceration system, you really shouldn’t comment. Obviously you are free to, but that’s a different analysis.

Oh, was it one Athleta store that was robbed?

Somehow, between a terrifying internal journey, I must have fooled myself into noting a broad pattern of increasingly organized crime sprees that are in the news close to every week now.

But I guess I should bury my head in the sand and continue to blame anyone who might be a victim or all those nasty corporations. We don’t need them in our communities. If they leave that’s their fault.

I agree. Let’s not put anyone in jail and see how it goes. Let’s take long incremental steps toward fixing the root causes of poverty, but put anyone in jail. I’m sure criminals will stop committing crimes.

Just so you know, there's a lot of daylight between "let's not put anyone in jail" (which nobody on this thread is advocating) and "let's build concentration camps and gas people for looting Athleta" (which somebody upthread is advocating).
