It was in the slides for the board meeting but they took it down.

Ok but why?
In case we have more snow?

Actually yes, that is probably the reason. I bet they close tomorrow as well so they have now burned through 5 days and can only use one more snow day. Historically APS has closed for other weather events as well or for some other random reasons, so if they don't try and claw back some days, they will end up extending the school year.

AEM in true rich liberal fashion are very upset because they all had travel plans and now this will ruin those. Of course, they threw in "oh and it will be awful for teachers too I guess..." And they would never, ever stop to consider that working parents had to make alternate arrangements for their kid and can't afford to travel multiple times a year so it actually they catch a break. But of course AEM would be moan anyone who is catching a break at their expense. They apparently don't get enough privilege in their N. Arlington neighborhoods (oh and those one or two people who will chime in, no, they actually live in S. Arlington of course in a SFH neighborhood)

I've been home with my small children all week and will have to work through the weekend. Sorry teachers, it's stressful and exhausting, but you can manage!

The punishment aspect of a male superintendent castigating his majority female staff by making them work during a planning day is something I cannot turn away from. You PP seem to share this view with him. Teachers were out with COIVD, some had to stay home with their own children and they are now being punished by having the only day they are given to get report cards done taken away.

You are making this into something that the PP did not say. There are male teachers -- this has nothing to do with gender.
I work in a male dominated profession (engineering) and I am not allowed to pull a "woman card" if I don't turn my work in on time. Sometimes that means working on a weekend if I have to take unexpected time off due to childcare or when my office was not accessible due to COVID. I'm not really sure why teachers are different. If its that big an issue, move the end of the quarter forward a week, and make grade prep day on MLK day or some other not real holiday.

I’m not the person that responded to you, but I am a teacher, and I can assure you, our goddamned deadlines must be met whether we had family issues, we’re sick, or whatever. Grades, interims, all progress reporting, finance, communications with a—holes like you. Your other solutions are fine, but the idea that we somehow have it easier than you is laughable. No one gives us a pass, either.

Ok- gender never plays a role. Take a day at spring break- I would prefer it as my kids go to FCPS and the breaks don't align anyway.

Bet when you or your kids are sick, you don’t have to find a substitute for yourself and prepare lessons for that day, either. A “sick” day does not mean we don’t have to do the work at all, and I’d argue we have to pay more dearly for it than in most professions. It’s all time sensitive. I’m not complaining, Ms. Engineer, but these are unusual times, and I think YOU may be the one that just needs to suck it up.

Lol. The only poster I know about lives near Drew and plans to visit her dad for the first time in 3 years. But don’t let me mess up the premise that apparently even you recognized as faulty.

Omg the school calendar is more a suggestion at this point than a set-in-stone document, if you planned on your kids not being in school that day just don’t send them to school that day.

I really hope they keep the school day on 1/31. It's already going to be a light month with this week gone plus MLK day. Add in any more icy weather and a few sick days and we could end up really grateful for another school day. My early elementary kids are already playing catch up after a year of not being able to engage through virtual learning.

At this rate, APS elementary kids will be averaging 1-2 years behind their peers nationwide. How will that EVER be made up???

Just do away with another day, not a day when teachers are scheduled to prepare grades. As simple as that. They need that day. And wait until the spring or after this wave passes and there aren’t so many issues finding subs.

Hey! That is me lol. Yup, going to visit my dad for the first time since 2019. I am not upset! I actually said "great" and it was not sarcastic. I think from a student perspective it is great that they go to school then (but get teacher concern). I would not have chosen to travel at the end of the month if I knew we would have been out this week. But what done is done seeing my dad is important..

I am not upset at all, that school is that day. Not really sure why PP characterized my post that way, other than they just want to be angry.

I guess the same applies for teachers who may have to meet the report card deadline with an unexpected day with students?
