WHAT?! APS now closed 1/6??

Anonymous
The issue is FCPS is closed again tomorrow. Most teachers m/staff live in FC. APS had every intention of opening, but not enough staff due to all the other counties around them except ACPS being closed.

It isn’t but if teachers put in for a sub because their kids are gone then there is no one to teach your kids….

Hmm. So it’s almost like they rely on schools being open to have someplace to send their kids so it doesn’t impact their ability to work?

Except with many other jobs, an employee having to stay home doesn’t affect the operation too much. When a teacher stays home, another human MUST be there in their place. APS wasn’t going to have enough human beings to keep your kids safe tomorrow.

I mean, this is borderline incompetence. Did APS really not think this through?

Did you think sh&t wouldn't happen during a week bracketed by two snowstorms, a Covid wave of positives in the region, and a teacher shortage? GFY.

Nope- it’s obviously none of those things that make sense- it’s APS and it’s hatred of parents.

reading comprehension much?

the issue isn't that APS is closed. the issue is that APS flip-flopped within a few hours leaving parents in the lurch. we also have to plan ahead you know. on top of that, if the flip-flop was based off of some unforeseen event, then fine. but this (FCPS closing) was entirely predictable, and thus APS would've withheld any announcement until they knew what FCPS was going to do.

Guess I’m in the minority. But I love snow days!! Love having the kids at home, them playing outside, eating lunch together. Admittedly easier for a SAHM with a nanny and DH working from home. So I do empathize with others who have different setups. But it’s important that all voices be heard.

Teachers aren’t exactly the only profession that needs to have a physical or mental presence devoted to their job.

Anyway, don’t mind me, I’m just being salty, it is what it is. I just got pissed off last year with the refrain “school isn’t childcare!!” when us working parents (overwhelmingly moms) were getting slammed.

This has got to be a joke

So what! They aren’t supposed to be using schools for child care remember.
They are supposed to be professionals yet they can’t figure out how to arrange alternate child care?
I absolutely favor APS hiring teachers from overseas. The sooner the better.

...teachers that presumably don't come with families of their own? I'm assuming they're fluent in English as well so they all are British or African?

I actually think it was surprising that other districts chose to close. So I can forgive them for this.

Agree. Do think they should all have an area check in though. This didn’t need to be a surprise.

No, not joking at all actually. I’m saying, I empathize with families for whom this is difficult. But personally, I’ve been having a lovely time all week and can’t wait for the excitement on DCs’ faces when I give them the news.

We will likely just take Friday off either way at this point, maybe go skiing!

Oh yes. My friend’s daughter had a teacher from overseas for calculus whose accent was so strong she needed a tutor the whole year!

Yep, let’s accommodate a few FFX-residing parents, but screw all the Arlington parents because who cares who would watch their kids.
