WHAT?! APS now closed 1/6??

Argh though. As a teacher the last thing I want is to have to do virtual days for Kindergarten if we get more snow. I was looking forward to tomorrow and seeing everyone. Sigh.

I mean, this is borderline incompetence. Did APS really not think this through?

I actually think it was surprising that other districts chose to close. So I can forgive them for this.

Agree. Do think they should all have an area check in though. This didn’t need to be a surprise.

Just wait and see what happens during spring break. They’re not the same week …

So what! They aren’t supposed to be using schools for child care remember.
They are supposed to be professionals yet they can’t figure out how to arrange alternate child care?
I absolutely favor APS hiring teachers from overseas. The sooner the better.

They already have been. DES just hired 2 new 5th grade teachers from overseas.

Oh yes. My friend’s daughter had a teacher from overseas for calculus whose accent was so strong she needed a tutor the whole year!

Indeed. Fire all the women when pregnant so their offspring won't get in the way of yours. It will be like the days when Elizabeth Warren was teaching. Just for you and yours!

It’s not going to get better next week. Look at MCPS numbers - almost all the schools are red now. Absences mean quarantines. It’s not just one-day childcare issues at this point. They need to go,virtual for a couple of weeks for everyone to pass quarantine.

You get that a lot of staff have CoVID, too, right? APS has always been conservative about weather related closing, compared to other districts in the area. This is the first time staff child care issues have had an impact. They don’t have the subs.

I’m fine with it. Slows the spread and all as well.

But...but...SCHOOL IS NOT CHILDCARE!

So here's a question... why on earth are offices closed? Did the Central Office really just give themselves the day off for no reason? The streets are fine, as stated in their email. Surely they have work to do even if there are some people out sick.

Maybe b/c they already have 40 out due to COVID at Syphax?

It isn’t but if teachers put in for a sub because their kids are gone then there is no one to teach your kids….

Hmm. So it’s almost like they rely on schools being open to have someplace to send their kids so it doesn’t impact their ability to work?

Yep, let’s accommodate a few FFX-residing parents, but screw all the Arlington parents because who cares who would watch their kids.

You get that APS didn’t do this to accommodate the teachers that live in Fairfax right? It’s because they realized they literally couldn’t operate schools with the number of staff that would be out tomorrow. I’m a teacher and parent and was happy to go back tomorrow but my (smallish) school already had 8 people out due to covid and then add the more than few Fairfax residing staff and you’ve got this. It’s not fun but it’s how it is. Retail stores can run on skeleton crews, schools can’t.

So call it remote working, not closed.

Hopefully there is not a COVID surge then too. It is easier when the schedule is made months in advance.

They were technically closed today but I still got responses from people at Syphax.

I emailed them for a year and a half and have never gotten a response. Lucky you.
