You can certainly make that argument, but it wouldn't be clear cut at all. The law is probably not limited to affiliation to a political party and, even what is considered a party would not be limited to R/D. And, while you would argue it was because of militia membership, they could just as easily frame it differently as tied to conservative viewpoints or even in groups that, while repugnant, couldn't reasonably be called a militia. |

So you can either not offer your place for rent at all, or offer it. You can't discriminate based on the renter's political views.
That's why the Harrington Hotel (and Harry's Bar) just decided to shut down last week. |
| DC is asking people not to come to town for the inauguration this year. If I owned an AirBnB, I would not rent it out at all. |
If you have fewer than 4 units, you are exempt from housing discrimination laws. I'm okay saying that I don't rent to Nazis. |
Unless DC wants to pay me the lost income I will get from a prime date, I don't really care about their preference. |
Yikes. I hope most AirBNB owners are willing to part with a few days of lost income rather than rent to Nazis. |
Yeah, on the one hand, the lost income from a prime date, on the other hand, attempted violent overthrow of the government... |
The National Guard is a militia. The cosplayers with guns aren't a militia, they're terrorists. |
DC Human Rights is separate from that. |
I would LOVE for someone to come challenge me for this. I have bottomless money for this fight, especially after this week. Nazis are garbage. Sorry, no room at the inn. |
| Political affiliation is not a protected class per Federal and DC fair housing laws. The Google machine is your friend. |
| AirBNB is now saying they will not allow rentals for Inauguration for people who are coming to participate in the riots. But I imagine that’s not going to be that effective since most people won’t say they’re coming for the riots. I really hope landlords do the right thing here. |
It is really unseemly to be that smug and that wrong, especially when the facts were cited elsewhere in this thread. Political affiliation is a protected class under DC law. https://ohr.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/ohr/publication/attachments/FairHousingoster_2016.pdf |
If it is that important to either of you, feel free to wire me the money I would earn from my AirBNB and I will be more than happy to remove my listing. Otherwise, it is really easy to talk a big when you have no skin in the game. |
How much money are you possibly talking about here? At most, $1,000 and probably much less? |
