Fortunately, nobody is saying, "It's ok to rent your AirBnB during inauguration week, just make sure it's not to a potential terrorist."

Yes of course. No one should be coming into town that week. Obviously I’d prefer to see tourists rather than terrorists but the responsible thing is for everyone to stay home.

There will be plenty of people coming into town to celebrate the inauguration. Obviously it will be nothing like it would be in normal times, but it will still be a lot of people.

No one is coming. There are no tickets, no balls to attend, nothing. Anyone who does come, is not coming to "celebrate."

Again, if you feel so strongly about this, feel free to compensate that home owner for his losses.

I can't compensate a person for behaving like a Ferengi instead of a minimally-decent human being.

I would like to remind that person, however, that it's not good for tourism when DC is bristling with security forces to defend against people trying to overthrow the government.

People do not lose their right to protest because you don't like their cause or because prior protests by people with similar views crossed the line from peaceful protest into more.

Declining to rent your AirBnB to someone, on grounds that you reasonably believe they might be there to participate in an armed riot =/= taking away someone's right to peaceful protest.

Unless DC wants to pay me the lost income I will get from a prime date, I don't really care about their preference.

Yikes. I hope most AirBNB owners are willing to part with a few days of lost income rather than rent to Nazis.

Yeah, on the one hand, the lost income from a prime date, on the other hand, attempted violent overthrow of the government...

If it is that important to either of you, feel free to wire me the money I would earn from my AirBNB and I will be more than happy to remove my listing. Otherwise, it is really easy to talk a big when you have no skin in the game.

Don't we all have skin in the game (if you can call it that) of attempted violent overthrow of the government? Not to mention that insurrection is really, really bad for the local tourism industry.

I think this is a bit exaggerated.

It is exaggerated and ignores that the general societal skin in the game is very different from a homeowner who can directly earn a lot of money from listing a place on AirBNB.

Well, sure, if a homeowner can directly earn a lot of money by renting to armed insurrectionists, why not?!?!

Hey, the insurrectionists needs a place to store their weapons and build the molotovs. PP is just trying to be hospitable. /s

What is the going rate for an overthrown democracy?

Lol. They are calling for armed riots next week. There are detailed, credible threats against lawmakers associated with them. It’s not a peaceful protest.

Then the FBI needs to do their job and police the terrorists. As an ordinary citizen, I don’t have the same information and just because someone is wearing a MAGA hat doesn’t mean they are terrorists.

As an ordinary citizen who is plugging their eyes, closing their eyes, and singing la la la at the top of their lungs - while posting on DCUM disputing all of the information you claim not to know about.

They aren't basing it on political affiliation -- unless you are suggesting that the whole Republican party is in on the insurrection and planned violence?

Political affiliation is not limited to Republican/Democrat.

Is planning a violent insurrection a political affiliation? Please explain.

It isn't minimally-decent of me to forgo income I rely on. Any long term effects on tourism are speculative and unrelated to what, I individually will do. I'm not going to incur a known loss today on the abstract idea that it might somehow have a long-term impact on income down the line.

Lots of political groups are coming to protest. You can't simply dismiss them all as "planning a violent insurrection" to waive away their rights under DC law.

Oh? Name some, please.

If losing a week or so in rentals is so devastating to you, perhaps it’s not the right passive income/investment for you.
