Reading on this forum made me feel as though schools wouldn't open until fall 2021. But then, today, I heard that NY is allowing schools to reopen. And I see the graphs on the VDH site looking good for NoVA. https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/coronavirus/covid-19-daily-dashboard/

It give me hope that we won't be ruled by fear forever. I am hopeful that on 8/15 Brabrand will have a plan to get the most vulnerable kids back in classrooms this fall.

It is getting painful to explain this over and again. I know everyone likes pretty pictures, but give a little attention to the words on the chart. The chart you are using to support your optimism does not show what you think it shows.

Note the title of the chart: cases by date of symptom onset. This type of chart WILL ALWAYS SHOW A DECLINE ON THE RIGHT. It declines becsuse it takes time for people to realize they have symptoms, to get a test, and to get the results. Since the right-most side of the chart is today, you would expect very few people who had symptom onset TODAY to show up with a positive test result TODAY. The same would be true for yesterday.

The chart that shows you trends in cases will be called: CASES BY DATE REPORTED.

Thst chart is NOT showing a downward trend or even a stable trend. It is showing an increase. In NOVA, we used to average about 165 cases per day. We are now at a 7-day average of 230 cases per day.

For VA as a whole, we used to average 550 cases per day, now we are now at a 7 day average of 1100+ cases per day. That is NOT "good news." We used to have about 800 hospitalized patients on any day. Now we have about 1275 patients every day (total, not new). Today, we have 1372.

I'm not trying to be a downer. I want my kids in school even for hybrid. The change to all virtual was NOT made based on worsening numbers because the numbers WEREN'T worsening when they changed course back on July 21. They are using Aug. numbers now to support a decision they made on July 21.

But, there is reason for concern statewide. Northm and Mr Rodgers (Dr. Oliver) need to drop the calm, hands off routine and get more serious about this.

The spread is happening...like the frog who boils to death in the slowly warming pot of water.

Start educating yourself by understanding the charts.

To be clear, the statewide numbers were worsening on Jjly 21, but the Fairfax and NOVA numbers were not significantly getting worse back on July 21.

Our ES principal said everyone would have teachers and classmates from their own school but that the county did ask that they make some effort to keep virtual kids with teachers who requested virtual and vice versa to the extent it was feasible to do so in order to make it a little easier to switch to hybrid in the future.

NP. There’s an easier way to explain this. Cases reported today, were likely due to exposure two to three weeks ago. So we are seeing some increases due to phase 3 reopening. Not sure we are leveling off at this new, slightly higher, infection rate or if it will get higher. Guess is the latter, but flat or declining would be better. I think this was anticipated btw, which is why they made the DL decision. I do think if we can keep it flat into September/October, some kids might actually get back in the buildings this calendar year.

You’re cute thinking this all virtual pivot has anything to do with Covid “metrics.” Numbers on July 21 looked better than they did in June when choice was offered. It is all or nothing with Brabrand, it seems. If there are not enough teachers for X NO ONE will be going in-person. #fea

I don't think they should do any fancy scheduling gymnastics at the HS level to try to keep the hybrid/virtual split. I don't think they will be back until the pandemic is over. It might be worth it at the ES level though. They might really try to get those kids back in.
