ICE announcement

At many consulates and embassies the current wait time for an F1 visa interview is about 6 months. Many new freshmen couldn't get a visa to come here even if they wanted to.

This is incredibly sad for a lot of students who did all the right things and may not have the resources or ability in their home country, to take online courses - no computer or internet or govt restrictions on G-Suite etc.

And for the US schools, it is an incredible financial burden.

How could they have no computer or internet if they have the money to come to the US to study?

Some schools meet full need for internationals. Or they got full ride merit scholarships.

There's also the fact that if you have a computer doesn't guarantee internet. I've lived in countries where entire swatches don't have public electric or water access. Columbia would be a great example of this.

The 'elites' live in gated, guarded neighborhoods and communities with full-time generations etc. But if the hardline for the internet is cut, you're still screwed.

And PP -- you can go to parts of Alabama and West Virginia today where locals don't have internet access because the companies just don't see the point of extending bandwidth or lines for what amounts to 5 houses over 250 acres.

There are places where Internet is politically or geographically unavailable / unreliable, regardless of your money. Sometimes it is restricted certain hours, which is a problem if your class meets on Eastern Standard Time. Or they may have gotten here via scholarship, community fundraising, or relative's bequest.

My SIL works at a SLAC and some of her foreign students are not safe to go home after becoming "westernized" or because they are gay. They would not have family support even if the family is rich.

and due to time difference lectures would be in the middle of the night and working on group projects is compromised.

I'm the PP you responded to and your point is absolutely right. My DC this spring at home had one peer in a class who was overseas; when that student led a group project (required in the class) she had to do it at some ungodly hour for her in order to meet virtually with students in the U.S. And the students in the U.S. were across all time zones. Finding a time that worked for everyone did get done but it was a huge effort. This was a student who is in a very, very tech-advanced, wifi-driven country. Imagine a student in a country without a solid infrastructure having to try to make those arrangements and have reliable connections to make all the "meetings" happen.

I know professors would alter their curricula to account for that, but still. Wow.

It’s horrible for ALL students. I want my children to be at schools with a diverse population. We learn so much from people from other countries. What a terrible thing to do.

What if their country won’t let them back in due to Covid restrictions on the US? How will they even track everyone down? They should be allowed to stay.

It’s way past transfer deadlines.

Many, many international students are not able to re enter the US for the fall semester anyway due to closed borders, lack of flights, etc. My son’s roommate has been working on trying to get back from Peru in time for the late August start for almost a month now. There are only a few humanitarian flights and he has been working with the embassy to try to get here. The parents facebook group is filled with similar stories of kids who can’t get back from Costa Rica, Nigeria, etc.

I agree that is is a shame for these students, and I wish we could get them all back here by August, but many colleges aren’t having on campus classes anyway and they are safer at home. At least they will be able to continue their classes remotely. If this had happened outside of COVID, that wouldn’t be the case.

Seriously, that's your concern, that your kids won't have international kids in his class at college? Even though he can, because class is ONLINE and nobody said these kids can't stay in class.

I hope universities come up with a 1 credit in person class for international students who need it so they can say that they are not full distance learning.

+1, such a simple idea!

While that's upsetting, I am more concerned about the students who are here now, who didn't leave the U.S. and who may not have anywhere safe to go now they are being kicked out.

My kid's college is doing a free 1-credit class this summer (since June). I wonder if this announcement had anything to do with it.

ICE already pre-empted that strategy.

This is what they say on having a hybrid model:

I'm not sure any university/college will find it worth it to legally tangle with ICE or the U.S. government on the issue.

Wow, I’m pretty moderate on immigration issues (don’t believe in automatic pathway to citizenship) and I find this disgustingly too far. Feel so bad for these students. It will also make life difficult for some universities too, though I’m less worried about them.

That's a Tweet, not the ICE document.

This is not just about who goes to US colleges and universities. Anyone who depends, or will depend, on the research being done in US university labs today should start worrying. There is no one to run the benches without these students.

The pressure on institutions to behave as though COVID means business as usual will be unholy.

The racism of the Trump administration is so great that they will leverage the safety of the entire population to make this gain.
