Were you spanked as a child?

Anonymous
I'm from Md, now 53. My parents did "spank" me. I don't think there was a parenting method or plan in play. I'm pretty sure it was done out of anger. My father struck me on approx 8 occasions. Slapping my behind with an open hand mostly. 2-4 times with a belt, once so bad my skin swelled, split and bled. Never again after age 11. My mother slapped my face, squeezed my chin and shook my head, hit me with wooden spoons, a log one time, hair brushes, etc. She hurled shoes, books, remote control, basically anything in her hand at me. She once stabbed me with a two pronged cooking fork.
I have never struck, slapped, spanked or otherwise physically abused my children. I have also never yelled at them. They are 16 and 18. I have received therapy to break the cycle of dysfunction and abuse.

The question was about the past, not the present or future. Your words don’t mean much after the fact.

Yes. I was a military brat but my dad was from southern VA. He did all the spanking.

Yes. Hand or newspaper rolled up and swatted on the legs. Not frequently and not after a certain age. I remember being spanked but I don’t remember the specific instances. I have a relationship with my parents. They would say it’s good bc I call and visit often and they don’t know any better. I would say it’s ok and I wish it were better but they are the type to “parent” and be “the authority” no matter what and it just doesn’t work for me anymore bc I’m in my 40s with my own kids.

Yes but only a few times.
Didn’t make me respect them, made me fear them. I kept a lot from them as I got into the elem years and secondary school years because we weren’t close.
Grew up in England. I’m 52 now.
I don’t spank my own kid, now 12.

Yes, I was spanked. Born in early 1970s in TX where my dad is from and later moved to southwest MI where my mother is from.

My abusive mother also beat me in pretty humiliating ways when angry but that is probably a separate issue. Although anyone who does that is certainly not going to hesitate to spank, or even think about it much.

51, NoVa

My mother often used a hairbrush for spanking.

Daily, mostly by my mother. Always out of a clear loss of temper, not a calculated punishment. Chicago.

Yes grew up in Chevy Chase. When my kids were young my mom used to say “you kids only did that once”. I wanted to say yes because you beat us after the first time but I never did. She was a crap mom. She’s a crap grandmother too.

Meh, that PP's comment is still on point. DP

Yes. Grew up in the south, born in the late 70s. It was a regular occurrence until I was probably middle-school aged. My house was so dysfunctional that spanking wasn't a big concern.

Yes. Once when I stole money from my mom's wallet.

Yes.
And slapped
And beat
And choked.
I know at least once when my brother was kicked (hard, it landed on his lower back and left a bruise.)

Dad was a physician and mom was a SAHM in New England.

Yes. Florida. 70

Yes. Dc area. Maybe once or twice a year when I was young if I did something particularly bad. I had no fear of my parents and love them dearly. I think sometimes a kid needs a spank if nothing else is getting through to them.
