People all over the world subsist on mainly carbs- it is very difficult for most of us to permanently reduce them in a keto loss way. I do not feel sick, sluggish or bloated when I have good sourdough or a delicious flour tortilla. I feel happy, except for the wishing I wasn’t fat part.I love all fruits and can’t imagine a world where I am just reduced to berries. |
Carrots are considered high carb? |
Yes. GF can often have as many carbs as it’s made from rice or corn. For pasta replacement I use zoodles, palming, or carba nada pasta. I’ve learned to make tasty dishes where low carb veggies are the base rather than a starchy high carb food tem. |
Curious why you think low carb isn't sustainable. |
Oh god here we go again with this debate.. |
Veggies that grow below ground are usually more high carb than veggies that grow above ground, but carrots are on the low end in that group. I suggest you look at this website and scroll down to the visual low-carb guide ... https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb this is the visual guide to veggies: https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb There are visual guides for fruit, dairy, meats, nuts, etc. Useful!! Mark's Daily apple, like Atkins, suggests that you jumpstart your weight loss with a low carb diet (<50 g/day) and then maybe raise it to 50-100 g/day. Maintenance they suggest 100-150 g/day. Being a short woman, I stick to the low end of those ranges, which can be a challenge (really very little fruit can be included in your diet), but seems to be effective. I had a weight surge this year, because I got sloppy and started eating bread again after not eating it for many years. So I just reset and am down about 5 pounds and fitting into my shorts. Now to fit into my small shorts!! A couple more months and I will ... but it will be November by then and I'll be pulling out the big sweaters. |
Can you say more about What you do eat? Do you really eat only broccoli or spinach and meat all the time? |
To add yo this question — do you also then add in the very high fat like in keto? |
Different diets are going to be sustainable for different people, so it’s not you, it’s that the diet is wrong for you. I lost weight by quitting alcohol entirely, having just one or two servings of simple carbs a day, and I tried to eat carbs with a good amount of fiber, protein, and fat so that I didn’t get hungry. I focus way more on protein than fats. I believe that when my calories aren’t in the form of foods that I can see and chew, they don’t satisfy me mentally as much. So 200 calories of cashew butter is not going to fill me up as much as 200 calories if chicken. So what you’re saying about fats resonates with me since fats except for avocados are usually so liquidy. |
Oh oops. Nix that question for that pp. I misread the thread. Am curious about it for those that are low carb |
NP. I can only eat super low carb (30 g a day) if I eat higher amounts of fat to feel satiated. I don't like much animal fat except dairy, so I eat nuts, heavy cream in my coffee, cheese, some nuts and some avocados. I lose weight very slowly and consistently if I do this and keep my calories under 1600 a day. I allow one meal a week where I don't count anything--usually something social either out or at a friend's house. I am 55, and this works for me--I lose an average of 1 lb a week. I have taken the summer off from counting carbs and calories and haven't gained much at all back (some good habits have stayed). I'll be ready to focus again when my kids are back in school in the fall. |
But everyone is different. I lost 45 pounds in 6 or 7 months while eating any fruit or vegetable I wanted, bread, pasta, rice, oatmeal. I've kept it off for 18 months. The only thing I needed to do was cut sugar and highly processed foods and add an hour of moderate exercise daily. Why would someone swear off carbs forever if they don't need to? That's not to say I'm eating sandwiches and pasta daily, but I normally have oatmeal and some sort of bread on any given day and pasta and rice at least once a week. |
Hmmm ... is it possible that some bodies behave a certain way and other bodies behave differently? I know it's a crazy concept but hear me out... |
What worked for me was -- IF (I eat only between 12-7); very little sugar, desserts, sweets; no calories from drinks; no processed foods; very little fruit; and high protein meals/good fat meals. I did eat carbs like bread, tortillas, and pasta, but sparingly and then also portion controlled -- so like only half the sandwich or wrap, very small portion of pasta, just one slice of pizza, etc. And if i was having a carby something like that at a meal, I would typically make my other meal of the day particularly light. |
Because a lot of people need to. That’s what you’re missing. |
