What happened to Duke? Emory? |
| Why admire people born into white privilege old money? It’s easy to be well dressed, well mannered, attractive, etc... when the number one stressors are solved. |
Vandy, Sewanee, Ole Miss, Auburn, Georgetown, GWU |
Washington & LEE |
Because when done for generations that lifestyle becomes polished art. The rest are unappealing and shallow strivers. |
Neither school is popular with southerners, especially not Emory. Southerners call Emory "long island university of Atlanta" Emory doesn't have a greek scene, football team and is more known for its graduate schools. It's not a traditional college experience that most UMC/wealthy southerners are looking for. It isn't a land grant school with a lot of history like UVA, Princeton, or even UGA. It has a student body that is mostly from other parts of the country (not southern). If a wealthy southerner is going to pay for private college, it isn't going to be to go somewhere like Emory. |
Strivers aren’t shallow. Someone who sneers at them however is. |
Only in your own mind. Blech. Art? Almost every major art movement in the 20th century was a reaction against antiquated notions of art. Art in the 20th century was specifically a rejection of old, stuffy, heritage driven “art”. If you had any actual culture you would understand that. |
Are you still Muslim? Did your DH convert? |
| They’re generally kind and welcoming. Better at entertaining than northern WASPs. Be aware of the family traditions. They will be extremely important. At a minimum, it will be expected to vacation with the extended family over summers at granny’s remote vacation cabin, and will be expected to gather with all the relatives at Christmas too. They will probably all root for the same college football team. I disagree with the PP who said that the only college choices are UVA or Princeton. UVA yes for a Virginia family. But going further into the Deep South, the big SEC schools matter a lot more. Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, LSU, etc. Generations of southerners have gone to those schools, and even top HS students still head there for undergrad. No one is going to go to some Northeast SLAC or be impressed by it. |
I have no clue; we went to Brown, where the devil is in charge with the education lol. They are Baptists, so allegedly alcohol free, and the teens drink heavily while also boating. Have I mentioned the hypocrisy? They all have gorgeous, big houses but with the master on the first floor, so I suspect they do hard core sleep training with the infants. |
Sounds wonderful?
Or just vapid. |

A lot of these posters seem to have no firsthand knowledge, and many stereotypes are either inaccurate or 50 years out of date. These days, many women in these families have great careers themselves. Lots of women under 60 wearing on trend clothing, not stuff our parents wore 40 years ago. Many Southern towns have great local arts scenes, and people under 60 are well traveled and cultured.
I also agree with the cold segregation of the North and the WOTP DC moms with the BLM signs working so hard to keep those brown kids out of their schools. I can't stand this type of hypocritical Northern left-wing racist liberal. |
Same. They're also the ones who need constant, and I do mean constant, reassurance that they aren't racist/bad people/are examples for all/etc. They're an exhausting bunch that's addicted to anxiety. |
They way people treat other people is "polished art" - not one's ability to pick expensive designer clothes. Anyone can do that. I know people without money who do that quite well! |
