Should I report my neighbors for car tax evasion?

One has a car with Wisconsin plates. One with California plates. I suppose they could be exempt but we live in Western Loudoun so I doubt they work on the Hill or are in the military.

I ended up behind the car with California plates today at a stop sign as we both pulled out of our driveways at the same time. The plates expired in June 2024.

I am normally a live and let live person, but tax avoidance costs everyone more. Would you report this if you were in my shoes? I am trying to decide…

LOL, sure it does, Karen

Everyone shouldn't pay taxes if they don't want to.

Explain how someone not paying the money grab personal property tax on their vehicle literally costs you more.

Taxes go up for those that are dumb enough to keep paying. Services are cut that others need.

Which services? Be specific.

It pays for infrastructure...roads, fire, police among other things. Stuff the nonpayers use.

Why should car owners pay for the fire and police departments? Don’t non-car owners use those services, too?

It's a personal property tax, commonly called car tax, but small business owners pay it on computer equipment too. Yeah look it up.
It is a way for renters to chip in.
Increasing residential real estate tax places more burden on owners not renters. Only alternative is increase income tax.

Public Education Supports local schools, educational programs, and resources for students.
Public Safety Funds police, fire services, and emergency management operations.
Infrastructure Maintenance Covers road repairs, public transportation, and maintenance of public facilities.
Parks and Recreation Supports the maintenance and development of parks, recreational facilities, and community programs.
Health and Human Services Provides funding for health programs, social services, and community assistance.

As a conservative though, that's stuff I don't think the government should be doing. So, I fully support these cancer-ridden scofflaws.

Look, you can call OP a busybody or a Karen, accuse her of having nothing better do, etc.

But tax evasion is theft. If everyone did it, we'd be screwed. Also in this specific instance, it's not just tax evasion -- refusing to register a car in your actual state of residence and to your actual address can also enable people to evade speeding tickets and toll violations.

I've reached an age where I do not care if people think I'm a busy body or a hall monitor. Tough shit. If I see you doing something wrong illegal, I'll go ahead and take the 10 minutes to report it to authorities. And then it can be your problem, like it should have been to begin with.

I have never used the fire or police department. Can I get a refund?

The rich do it all the time, and they’re dealing in numbers that are actually meaningful.

Keep fighting your fellow serfs for the crumbs like the Good German you are.
