OMB trying to change guidance to no back pay

Anonymous
i own a landscaping, construction company. If it rains, snows, etc and the jobs get cancelled, we don't get paid. The pay can then be made up by working longer hours, during weekends, etc. I want to pay them but if there is snow on the ground for two weeks, I cannot be solvent. Is inclement weather their fault? The guys work hard, have families to feed, etc and earn a fraction of what these lazy a$$ Feds earn so no I don't feel sorry. No work = no pay!

Inclement weather can’t be helped. Not passing a budget for political reasons can be avoided and federal workers shouldn’t bear the pain, especially if we ever want decent workers in the government.

There are so many inaccuracies and the language used is offensive and inflammatory. It is clear none of these authors have served a day in the military.

My husband is a 100% disabled veteran and I am APPALLED by the Post article. It is biased and profoundly anti-veteran.

DH is a brain tumor survivor and has memory and serious physical issues; symptoms (including severe headaches) first appeared after he returned from deployment, which included almost 24/7 exposure to burn pits. He has been too sick to work since 2008. We first applied for VA disability in the 2010s, after the VA started the burn pit registry, but he was denied because--even though multiple doctors wrote letters stating that his type of brain tumor was consistent with chemical exposure, and burn pit veterans get brain tumors at a far, far higher rate than the general population--we could not definitively prove it was service connected. We appealed and he was denied. It wasn't until the PACT Act, which includes a presumption of service connection for certain conditions, that he received benefits.

And now the Post publishes this hit job painting all disabled veterans as fraudsters getting paid for acne and ED, without noting the repeated visits with VA-retained doctors and extensive medical review claims are subject to? And without noting the many, many combat veterans with Stage 4 cancers and other serious health issues who languished with no coverage at all for almost two decades--the literal reason the PACT Act was passed? Where was the coverage of that, and what the hell agenda does the Post have here?

Just because your husband’s VA claim is legit doesn’t change the fact that many VA disability claims are fraudulent. That article is not profoundly anti-veteran because it is profoundly true.

So many “disabled” veterans. It’s the easiest path to a lifetime pension after working for three years from 18-21.

What they need is a windfall elimination clause where if the disabled veteran is able to work and earn a livable wage their disability payments are reduced or rescinded.

There’s a 100% disabled veteran in my neighborhood who works as a commercial airline pilot. In addition to his disability payments, pension and airline pilot salary the property taxes on his $2 million house are waived due to his disability. I have 50 similar stories.

I work in a career that’s filled with veterans and nearly 100% of them are “disabled”.

I work with a 100% disabled veteran running a marathon next month, and it's not his first. He's probably in better shape than I am!

The disabled veteran is working right?

As a supervisor with a private contractor, absolutely making well into six figures.

As a landscaper or contractor you set your rates with the risks you incur in mind. Federal employees are paid a certain amount based on what they provide to you, the taxpayer.

For example, your employees at the Department of Energy know extremely sensitive information that other countries would pay very good money to know. I personally don’t want those individuals to be going months without salary and vulnerable to espionage efforts.

People who work for the government have skills and knowledge that are more valuable than a landscaper, sorry. There’s no analogy there.

Just the other day, I saw a TSA worker eating A5 Wagyu steak for lunch.

Are your landscaping workers hired as salaried employees with a reasonable expectation of stable and consistent employment? Do many have masters/JDs/PHDs? Are you investing 10s to 100s of thousands per year per employee in their recruitment/clearances/training?

If you want your country’s nuclear scientists, national security experts, etc to be treated as day laborers then you’ll get what you pay for.

Why are you proud of not paying your people? You suck.

You own the business, you set the prices, you get a ton of tax breaks for being a "job creator." You should hold up your side of things. BTW, I pay my mowers monthly; if it rains today they will come tomorrow and everybody still gets paid on time.

While on furlough, I am not allowed to:
- work for the competition (other countries)
- work for our customers (industry)
- take any job, even retail, without approval
- trade stock without approval
- leave the country without a security briefing
- teach or publish without approval
And, I'm supposed to be on call in case they decide they want me to come in after all.

If you were to put similar restrictions on your employees, you'd need to pay them.

Feds also can’t just pick up work in many cases without prior approval from ethics. So, there’s a shutdown and they are out if work without pay and they can’t just pick up a consulting job, or even substitute teach or drive an uber.

Many Feds enjoyed a near three (3) year long paid vacation during and well past the pandemic. In my hood, most were doing zero work by their own admission and yes, these were highly paid scientists, engineers, etc. I did not notice much guilt in any one of them - but they griped plenty when ordered back to "work". I get it...the law mandates Feds must be paid if furloughed, but this debate is not about that. People should get paid if they work. Simple

I know a few of Fed emps who moved out of the area thinking it was a staycation until retirement. A few also took on second jobs or opened up small businesses. Karma I guess....
