Our contractors are getting paid while we work without pay and they will probably not compensate for leave even if it was previously scheduled.

I'm a democrat but this is just one more confirmation that the Democrats are playing checkers while the Republicans are playing chess (or perhaps something more serious like nuclear chicken). This shutdown was always going to cause more pain than than the dems will gain - if they gain anything at all in the end.

I'm a Dem and for once I think they are playing chess while GOP is playing checkers. GOP totally underestimated that ACA matters to people including without their own ranks - 57% of people who use ACA are republicans; 77% of all people want ACA subsidies extended. They thought they could scream about illegals for a few days, sentiment would turn and Dems would cave. Not working out how they want. As evidenced by the fact that DJT is now suddenly saying oh yeah I'm talking to Dems (he's not) or the mass firings that were going to happen last Wed haven't started yet and just today they said it'll be in 4-5 more days; now this back pay trial balloon to scare Dems into reopening the govt with no deal on healthcare just promises of "we'll negotiate" - which we all know they won't after govt reopens.

Congressmen are already much more wealthy than the average American. The more we limit pay, the more we'll get wealthy Congressmen who are using the position to maximize their wealth and the wealth of their friends.

There has always been room to change the law, including through the CR or appropriations. But barring such a change, it the government is obligated to provide back pay.

Many of us civil servants want to do work, but we have been told unless it’s an emergency we we’re not allowed to do it. We can’t plan for the future, do some housecleaning while things are slow, go to meetings that aren’t an emergency.

People who are on the outside don’t understand what’s going on in the inside.

Nobody’s denying military personnel, healthcare, except the Republicans.
