This area will be completely changed and a huge loss of population and tax base. The Camp Fire destroyed about 11,000 homes, which amounted to about 90% of the town's structures. So far 2,500 homes have been rebuilt. Today's population of just under 10,000 is less than half the 26,000 who lived there before the blaze.

It’s politicians’ job to cope with climate change and to protect the population as best they can. You can’t just work to prevent it in the future, cutting emissions etc - you have to mitigate today.

Democrats are hellbent on “fighting climate change” versus adapting to it.

Only those that adapt to change survive.

The first stage is to acknowledge the problem. The GOP deny it. You can't adapt to something you don't even acknowledge.

And of course part of dealing with climate change is to adapt things to the new reality. But again with the acknowledging part...

GOP have nothing to do with California. California and especially Los Angeles is run by democrats.

Agree. The state is entirely run by the left and far left. There literally is no republican influence in the state whatsoever.

These fires are just another example of terrible leadership. Like Chicago, Portland, NYC, Baltimore, etc.

Climate change isn’t a local issue.

Planning for climate change really is a local issue. New Orleans is not going to plan the same way LA is going to.

Climate change does not happen overnight.

Wild fires have been part of California before it was known as California.
Miami is not really working that issue as part of their plan.

New Orleans is going to be completely underwater and most of the city is already below sea level. Their only solution is to relocate.

However, it’s long been known that the LA FD union strongly gate keeps who can become a firefighter. Even when I was growing up and still to this day, it’s widely known that you need to have a nepotism connection to get into the firefighting Academy. They also gatekeeper who can get into the training programs like EMT or volunteer search and rescue for your local community, that’s a precursor to getting into the firefighting Academy. The union likes the labor shortage because it means virtually unlimited overtime dollars. So I take heed with these complaints, has been strongly acting like a cartel in terms of its labor. Another issue is that looks like it. It’s heavily white and many of firefighters don’t even live in the state of California. Fly in from places like Idaho and Nevada to do their shifts and then they leave with their paychecks. If you’re familiar with the show, southern charm of the characters, husband is a California firefighter who lives in South Carolina! He flies in every other week to do his shifts up in Sacramento and then flies home. This is the root of the labor issue with the Los Angeles fire department and other fire departments in California.

Californian here who can confirm. This is accurate.

Sounds like they need to get rid of the union.

Most likely. But that is a NOLA local issue related to climate change.
LA does not need to relocate- just have better fire management plans and be able to execute.

Climate change is VERY local.

The insurance fiasco will resolve itself with free markets and fire control plans insurance companies believe in.

Yes. That’s what happens when you let offenders out of jail, pursue catch-and-release law enforcement policies, leave reservoirs empty, and fail to build infrastructure to keep up with population growth.

What's the problem with the fire fighters living in another state? It seems like a practical way to manage with a small salary (it looks like the top compensation is $124k per year which is peanuts for that area).

The Santa Ana winds can be 100 mph. I really don't know of any insurance company is going to want to insure that area again.

Our country willingly elected Trump and Biden. Voting for terrible leadership isn't exclusive to California.

Careful. There will be a full public accounting of whether the reservoirs were full and whether brush was cleared in the wooded areas. If you want to make bold statements like "the reservoirs were full" when even California officials are saying otherwise, it's going to look bad. The left cannot just create reality. No one is going along with it anymore.

The irony, given that your MAGA leader lies constantly.

Ah yes, everything the left doesn't like is "misinformation."

Buckle up, we are just getting started.

DP.

Your guy Trump LIES. Just because you don't like him being called out for it doesn't accomplish anything for you other than showing that now you lie too.

High time for CA politicians to prioritize the safety of its own citizens, rather than waving the welcome mat for invaders smuggling kidnapped children for sex trade.

Sounds like some DA wants more fire.

Seek a mental health professional if that's your obsession and your view of the world.
