Tysons Corner Casino -- Foregone Conclusion Now?

This is a terrible idea for northern Virginia. I cannot believe that they keep resurrecting this in such a short amount of time. Are the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors bought and paid for?

Did you even read the article? This is NOT coming from the Board of Supervisors! This is being forced upon Fairfax by Senator Marsden.

I did read it. Yes, Marsden is pushing this hard, but I think the BoS will be swayed / forced into do this. They will give in if Republicans push a lot of government workers out of the area and the contractors follow.

Marsden used to be a Republican.

What would be so bad about having a casino in Tysons?

There’s literally a million reasons.

A casino will hurt local businesses, increase gridlock and public safety problems, lower property values, and encourage risky behaviors, while forever changing the character of our community.

Casinos bring exponentially more crime.

“Here's 7 key details:

The casino is part of a proposal for The View development in Tysons, a joint venture by Saudi Arabian firm Khalid Juffali and Northern Virginia firm Clemente Development. Juffali and Clemente bought the property for $57M in 2020 for this purpose.
In late 2023, Clemente started giving an enormous total $205K to a brand new Political Action Committee called "Building a Remarkable Virginia PAC", a new PAC whose website does not mention its ties to the casino plan. (A truth that begs the question: If it's such a good idea, why hide it from the website?)
This new PAC is one of the biggest donors to Marsden and his allies who voted for the Tysons Casino. According to donation data from the Virginia Public Access Project, in late October, Clemente gave $25K to "Building a Remarkable Virginia PAC" and $10K directly to Marsden.
Oct 23, 2023, the same PAC passed along $24K of the $25K directly to Marsden. Marsden wins the election in Nov 2023 by spending a whopping $1.2 Million (50 TIMES the $25K his opponent spent). An insane amount for a state senate seat.
Having secured the seat, on January 5, 2024, the developer then gives a whopping $180K to "Building a Remarketable Virginia PAC".
12 days later, Marsden brings a bill to allow a casino in FFX county with narrow specifications that allow a casino only on the land owned by Juffali/Clemente. Specifically, Marsden's bill allows for a casino in Tysons only on land that meets the following conditions: (i) located within one-quarter of a mile of an existing station on the Metro Silver Line, (ii) part of a coordinated mixed-use project development, (iii) outside of the Dulles airport flight path, (iv) within two miles of a major shopping destination containing not less than 1.5 million square feet of gross building area, and (v) outside of the Interstate 495 Beltway.
According to media reports here, these project conditions appear to be found only in the land owned by the major donors to Marsden's campaign.

Is this illegal? Probably not.

Is the Tysons Casino bill the work of bought-and-paid-for politicians? Sure looks like it.

Citizens and residents of Fairfax County deserve better.”

That's far from settled fact:

"Encourage risky behaviors." Like what?
"Changing the character of our community." Who are you afraid is going to come to a casino in Tysons?

Think carefully about your answer to that last question.

Casinos are ratchet AF. Brings a sleazy & tacky crowd. I hate going to concerts at MGM in Maryland because the casino crowd is just messy, the parking garage is a zoo, and there’s a ton of crime issues (drunken brawls, shootings, domestic fights, etc)

How close is proposed site to any schools? How does it impact traffic? How many of the so-called jobs will be permanent versus construction. If the feds move out, will this be like a sad empty shopping mall or a building surrounded by desert after the feds pull out and contractors follow?

Ratchet? Explain.

It’s not that bad or you wouldn’t have gone to concerts—plural—at the MGM.

I like the MGM. It’s fun. I saw Cher there and it was an amazing night. I think the casino itself is nice—no smoking, lots of security. Now, I don’t go on the floor at midnight on a Saturday or anything like that. But a little gaming, a nice dinner at Voltaggio, a concert, I’m in. The lobby is beautiful with the seasonal artistic displays.

That said, not all casinos are that nice. I went to Maryland Live for a concert, and it’s not anywhere near as nice as the MGM. I didn’t linger.

Casinos are awful, attract crime, are predatory. There is nothing redeeming about them whatsoever. Look at what the MGM in National Harbor has become. If there isn't crime inside there, it's in the parking lot or you're being followed from the parking lot and assaulted when you get home. Look at the casino in downtown Baltimore near the Ravens Stadium off of 295. It is just disgusting.

In a couple of days, some support articles should mention schooling funding, public transport, and threats of higher taxes unless the casino is built.
