What would be so bad about having a casino in Tysons?
There’s literally a million reasons. A casino will hurt local businesses, increase gridlock and public safety problems, lower property values, and encourage risky behaviors, while forever changing the character of our community. Casinos bring exponentially more crime. “Here's 7 key details: The casino is part of a proposal for The View development in Tysons, a joint venture by Saudi Arabian firm Khalid Juffali and Northern Virginia firm Clemente Development. Juffali and Clemente bought the property for $57M in 2020 for this purpose. In late 2023, Clemente started giving an enormous total $205K to a brand new Political Action Committee called "Building a Remarkable Virginia PAC", a new PAC whose website does not mention its ties to the casino plan. (A truth that begs the question: If it's such a good idea, why hide it from the website?) This new PAC is one of the biggest donors to Marsden and his allies who voted for the Tysons Casino. According to donation data from the Virginia Public Access Project, in late October, Clemente gave $25K to "Building a Remarkable Virginia PAC" and $10K directly to Marsden. Oct 23, 2023, the same PAC passed along $24K of the $25K directly to Marsden. Marsden wins the election in Nov 2023 by spending a whopping $1.2 Million (50 TIMES the $25K his opponent spent). An insane amount for a state senate seat. Having secured the seat, on January 5, 2024, the developer then gives a whopping $180K to "Building a Remarketable Virginia PAC". 12 days later, Marsden brings a bill to allow a casino in FFX county with narrow specifications that allow a casino only on the land owned by Juffali/Clemente. Specifically, Marsden's bill allows for a casino in Tysons only on land that meets the following conditions: (i) located within one-quarter of a mile of an existing station on the Metro Silver Line, (ii) part of a coordinated mixed-use project development, (iii) outside of the Dulles airport flight path, (iv) within two miles of a major shopping destination containing not less than 1.5 million square feet of gross building area, and (v) outside of the Interstate 495 Beltway. According to media reports here, these project conditions appear to be found only in the land owned by the major donors to Marsden's campaign. Is this illegal? Probably not. Is the Tysons Casino bill the work of bought-and-paid-for politicians? Sure looks like it. Citizens and residents of Fairfax County deserve better.” https://notysonscasino.org/f/impact-of-tysons-casino-3?blogcategory=Political+Corruption
