Casinos for FCPS??? Ha! Schools have huge amounts of cash - or they would have if, if, if they stopped the DEI push. It's a jobs program. Follow the money, money, money.

Or, they could do nothing, and focus on the best number of trees to require in parking lot medians or whatever.

So, here's my take:

-The General Assembly legislators are passing the buck. I hope the citizen opposition will be enough to overcome their desire to cater to the unions, but it might not be. Because they can pass this bill, and maybe (unlikely) Youngkin vetoes because he's also looking at his political future. So it's passed and then the buck passes to the FFX Co. Board of Supervisors and then they have to deal with the pressure from Comstock and the unions. The casino isn't going in Surovell's backyard so he doesn't care and he keeps Comstock and the unions happy because he tried.

Surovell is a total tool. He has a giant chip on his shoulder coming from southeastern Fairfax and his entire agenda has always been looking for ways to screw and exploit northern Fairfax so a few more pennies can be spent on Route 1 projects. But from a fiscal perspective a casino is a terrible deal for the county as a whole and for Tysons in particular.

Just got an email from Jimmy Bierman expressing his disappointment that the state senate passed the casino bill.

Seems like a sham. After all it’s being pushed by other Democrats like Surovell, Pekarsky, and Marsden. They are in bed with the unions and don’t care about the impact on the Tysons area.

Sorry, Jimmy; talk some sense into your Democratic colleagues like stupid fat-ass Stella or get the BOS to put out a clear statement it opposes a casino and won’t put this out for a referendum. Until then you’ve lost our support.

I live in Reston but putting a casino anywhere in Fairfax or adjoining counties is too close for me. I don’t want the traffic or the crime. I have teenagers and an important thing for teenagers is that they have spaces where they can gather, have some independence, but in a (relatively) safe environment. A casino in Tysons would kill that.

I’m opposed to this casino but also very distracted by what is going on in the fed government right now. But we shouldn’t let our distraction allow for casino proponents to sneak this in.

Casinos are ratchet AF. Brings a sleazy & tacky crowd. I hate going to concerts at MGM in Maryland because the casino crowd is just messy, the parking garage is a zoo, and there’s a ton of crime issues (drunken brawls, shootings, domestic fights, etc)

what are you really trying to say here?

How do we stop this. I fill out every form I get. The consensus is nobody in this area wants it (don't recall the percentages), but yet it still made it through Va. Senate.

Also, if it passes, how long will it take to built? We will be planning our exit from the area.

Is it too late for residents to do anything about Virginia Senate passes controversial casino bill?

There still has to be a voter referendum in Fairfax County, which the Board of Supervisors must approve. Unfortunately, Fairfax County is one of the largest counties in the country and a voter referendum can still pass even if 90% of McLean, Vienna, Tysons, and Reston residents vote against it.

A referendum is probably 1-2 years away, and, if that passes, the developer would submit a proposed development plan to Fairfax County Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors for approval. It will probably take at least a year for the developer to secure those approvals. Then it will likely require 18-24 months to construct the casino. Other amenities like the theater, convention area, etc., will almost certainly be constructed after the casino. So realistically, it is at least 5 years away and 6-7 years is more likely.

Since I don't think I plan to retire here and I live in south county along Route 1, I will vote yes. Let it burn. Additional crime enforcement around the casino will consume any revenue the state allows Fairfax County to keep.

What a charming response.

We keep making our voices heard and will of course vote "no" but we will be making an exit plan. I pay high taxes to live in a small home because it's safe here and the schools are good. My kids will be done with high school by then. I envisioned us catching the occasional show at Capital One not being swarmed by the Casino crowd.
