OP here. I want to hear more about what he’s doing right! I get it, the media loves to talk about his eschewing of Covid guidance, Martha vineyard stunts, and the theater of his “dont say gay” bill—but these are the “culture war” type things. I’m hoping to learn more about the positives ways he’s improved life for the people of his state.

OP, if you're serious, here are some pointers.

Which other Governor...

Focused on protecting the elderly from Day 1 (the opposite of Cuomo)

Kept schools safely open most of 2021-2022, improving the lives of thousands of kids and their parents.

Prevented the massive riots that took place in so many other states, protecting the lives of an untold number of minorities.

Treated adults like adults, so that for example they could open and visit, safely, shops and restaurants.

Is this some kind of hideous joke?

He lied about Covid data and Florida has the highest rate of senior deaths. He had a dangerous surgeon general. Both made it entirely political.

I would never retire there with sky high housing costs. The restrictions on immigration make it tough to get things done around the house. My MIL has waited a year to get her driveway done. They can’t get yard workers. No thanks!

Also fired the woman creating the public data regarding COVID. Didn’t like the way she reported it . Changed it to make him look better.

No, that's not true. She was fired because she changed the website repeatedly when her superior told her not to. She then illegally accessed the system after she was fired.

DeSantis' covid response looks "crazy" to liberals only because blue states went so extreme with their responses. DeSantis just followed the pandemic play book that was in place, before people like Cuomo and Whitmer panicked in spring of 2020.

Interesting b/c my friends in public health do not think his conduct was most becoming. Cuomo and Whitmer had to taken drastic steps as their states were epicenters for the virus. They say DeSantis operated in an uneven, inequitable manner, especially in the early days of the vaccine distribution when he prioritized donors over more vulnerable population groups.

Everyone has friends. Cuomo had to take drastic steps because bodies were staking up in refrigerated trucks until they could be hauled to mass graves near Fresh Kills.

Posturing, failing, and trying to middle of the road everything when the working class needs real help.

She would, at least wouldn’t be an embarrassment and start an epic fashion fail thread.

Wait. Your "friends in public health" are not aware that Cuomo's decision to send elders with Covid to nursing homes full of older, vulnerable people resulted directly in THOUSANDS of deaths?

Truly equitable, that was.

Btw, the "donor" thing is BS too. Florida gave earlier access to vaccines to populations based on their actual risk, not on their skin color (or their $$).

I’m curious what DeSantis is doing for the middle class. Surely you will answer. I just wish FL would institute state income tax and stop begging for the Fed to bail them out.

I don’t have kids so the ridiculous school laws DeSantis has passed do not affect me. And critical race theory law does not allow it to be taught in schools. BUT, it never was taught in Florida schools. DeSantis wasted a lot of time and money to pass laws that don’t make a difference to most. But it was a great way to get your name in print and on newscast for re-election. Create a lot of BS to detract from real issues in Florida. We have one of the highest cost for renting and Florida is a tourist industry which means most who live here to support that industry make minimum wage. He does nothing to help the little guy.

You mean, NY had to keep bodies in refrigerated trucks BECAUSE of the drastic step that Cuomo took in sending infected Covid patients into nursing homes while he was writing a book about how awesome he was.

And certain hospitals were overrun in New York because Cuomo was more interested in doing press conferences and interviews with his brother, than instituting a system where patients from crowded hospitals could be transferred to open beds upstate.

Remember when everyone around here swooned over Cuomo, while people were convinced DeSantis would be responsible for mass graves? How'd that work out?

Shhhhhh it's a secret.

No one on DCUM can discuss such things!

Op here. Thanks for the post. Unfortunately I feel that’s how we’ve come to know DeSantis, through the stunts that grab the headlines.
Floridas economy and dynamic is a unique one: the wealthy and the part time residents, then you have the working class.
Does the “little guy” share your sentiment down there, or are they buying in? He’s must be winning them over somehow!

We are now at the age that we are thinking of retiring and possibly snowbirding. We love Florida in the winter. I cannot stand DeSantis, but I am not going to let him stop me from buying property there and spending warm winters there. I am not moving because DeSantis did or does a good job with the state. I think, overall, he is a horrible person. But I am planning to winter there in spite of him. Nowhere else on the East Coast can replicate the warm winters. And I'm not interested in going out West.

DH's parents were snowbirds there for a few decades. DH occasionally talks about it, but still some years, if not a decade, away.

My hesitation is how DeSantis handled COVID and concerns that other GOPers may handle public health crises in a similar fashion. I am no longer sure I can put money into a state where elected officials eschew science.

And I love that warm weather in winter.

Why not Puerto Rico? Bahamas? Virgin Islands? Europe? Why would it matter if it’s on the east coast?

I am the person who said I would snowbird in Florida despite DeSantis. I have a fear of flying. So no to PR, VI or Europe. It's super easy and not outrageously expensive to drive down to Florida, spend 3-4 months there in a condo, and drive back home in the spring.
