Life with DeSantis

DH's parents were snowbirds there for a few decades. DH occasionally talks about it, but still some years, if not a decade, away.

My hesitation is how DeSantis handled COVID and concerns that other GOPers may handle public health crises in a similar fashion. I am no longer sure I can put money into a state where elected officials eschew science.

Why not Puerto Rico? Bahamas? Virgin Islands? Europe? Why would it matter if it’s on the east coast?

He also refuses to do anything about the insurance crisis. It is mostly the litigation from roofers that is tanking the industry, not hurricanes. The legislature could do something about this, but the won’t.

This is the complete opposite of what I experienced.

You have health insurance, and didn’t need to shell out hundreds of dollars to get a doctor’s note for an early vaccine? Must be nice.

How much did you have to pay for the vaccine and which type did you receive? How much did you pay for subsequent vaccines and boosters? I can provide a contact who can reimburse you.

Vaccines/boosters are free.

OP here. I want to hear more about what he’s doing right! I get it, the media loves to talk about his eschewing of Covid guidance, Martha vineyard stunts, and the theater of his “dont say gay” bill—but these are the “culture war” type things. I’m hoping to learn more about the positives ways he’s improved life for the people of his state.

OP, if you're serious, here are some pointers.

Which other Governor...

Focused on protecting the elderly from Day 1 (the opposite of Cuomo)

Kept schools safely open most of 2021-2022, improving the lives of thousands of kids and their parents.

Prevented the massive riots that took place in so many other states, protecting the lives of an untold number of minorities.

Treated adults like adults, so that for example they could open and visit, safely, shops and restaurants.

Is this some kind of hideous joke?

He lied about Covid data and Florida has the highest rate of senior deaths. He had a dangerous surgeon general. Both made it entirely political.

I would never retire there with sky high housing costs. The restrictions on immigration make it tough to get things done around the house. My MIL has waited a year to get her driveway done. They can’t get yard workers. No thanks!

I know someone who was living in an assisted living home, which was a popular reason to move to Florida, who was locked up and they could not even go beyond their door of their suite... this all ran this for almost 18 months. They had to have meals dropped off and retrieved at their door. Imagine closing your life like this. Perhaps while you got to enjoy and take a chance spreading Covid, many were left behind and simply ignored. Same goes for the shots, testing, unemployment, actual death counts, students who had serious health issues.

And heck, I want to know more about when he was a teacher and partied with his students.

Maybe it was rosy for those who live in places like "The Villages" but many who I know were really mad and even as Republicans swore off DeSantis.

False, false and false.

Folks, where do you get your "news"?

Just think of this: if what PP says was true, do you think Floridians would have rewarded DeSantis with a massive, historic win?

Nope.

They voted him because he did a good job. Not perfect, but certainly better than the majority of other states.

Paranoia is not your friend.

Previous post is absolutely true. My mom in AL. Locked away.

DeSantis didn’t allow Louisiana folks into FL. FHP and police at state border denying them access during their high spread of COVID. Deny cruise ship to land. He is horrendous.

Wait what?

Florida was the state that handled Covid in a most similar way to most EU countries, reflecting the science and the public good.

It's good when serious policy-makers, not teacher unions and deranged extremists, run the show.

You have been exposed to way too much misinformation.

People over the age of 70, who were the most at-risk of covid death, have been safer in Florida than basically anywhere else.

Do the research, do the math. It's plain obvious if you dare to see it.

Please post this obvious research I am missing.

It's a very simple division.

Total Covid deaths/ people over the age of 70.

Do this across all states or, to simplify, simply do the big ones: CA, TX, NY, PA, IL ... and contrast with FL.

You'll learn a thing or two.

Also, don’t forget DeSantis manipulates the data and had the day go to him before releasing to federal.

No, that's not true. She was fired because she changed the website repeatedly when her superior told her not to. She then illegally accessed the system after she was fired.

DeSantis' covid response looks "crazy" to liberals only because blue states went so extreme with their responses. DeSantis just followed the pandemic play book that was in place, before people like Cuomo and Whitmer panicked in spring of 2020.

But what’s life REALLY like with Ron in charge? How are things in FL? Are residents safer down there? Are the effects of inflation not felt as much? Do they have better health care/insurance, infrastructure, schools, etc?

DeSantis supporters in Florida, sell us on your guy.

NP here. NOT a DeSantis voter or supporter, but things in FL are...just fine.

The economy is booming, unemployment is low.

People who own homes have seen tremendous appreciation; people who don't are having trouble finding affordable housing.

Now that KN-95s, vaccines, etc. are widely available, I don't care what other people do WRT to Covid.

Homelessness and crime are concerns, but stats are middle-of-the-pack among states.

My view of public schools is that quality varies widely, with most being middling to crappy. But privates are widely available and less expensive than elsewhere. And, as discussed earlier, the state scholarship program provides exceptional access to an above-average state university system.

The culture war stuff is performative and has virtually no impact on day-to-day life. Where schools leave a gap, we fill it with discussions at home (discussing systemic racism, LGBTQ issues, etc.).

Lots of issues need more attention: environment, insurance costs, K-12 education. But is that really different from other states?

IMO, life under DeSantis is pretty much like life under any other governor. Uneventful and limited impact on most people's lives.

Interesting b/c my friends in public health do not think his conduct was most becoming. Cuomo and Whitmer had to taken drastic steps as their states were epicenters for the virus. They say DeSantis operated in an uneven, inequitable manner, especially in the early days of the vaccine distribution when he prioritized donors over more vulnerable population groups.
