That is part of it but I’m also seeing complaints that there should’ve been a disclaimer when the video dropped bc lil Nas x has a targeted population which is kids.

Kids are not Lil Nas Xs targeted population. His first major song was about 'lean' and having sex. Just because parents let their kids repeat the lyrics - just as parents let their kids sing the lyrics of Watermelon Sugar which is about cunnilingus - does not make it a kids song.

Never said his songs were for kids but that’s who listens. Old town road is popular bc kids loved that crap. So yeah, his main audience is kids.

And it’s the responsibility of adults to limit that.

I couldn’t listen to Police in middle school because Roxanne was a prostitute and there was apparently a chance I would work the red light district if I listened to Police.
you must not have kids because kids are bombarded with this stuff and it is impossible to just turn it off. Algorithms and cookies are. designed to pop up based on what they’ve liked in the past. So yes if everyone played the number one rap song in the country and liked Lil Nas X when he was just a fun loving pink cowboy outfit wearing kid who happens to be gay, then guess who’s new music video is popping up on YouTube? I didn’t think he would put a video out like that and have lost all respect for him and the very things I thought he represented. It’s unfortunate because he really had the opportunity to do more with his platform as the first openly gay rapper.

Yes. I have kids. My biggest worry is drinking in college and country music is always encouraging children to get wasted, drink beer, drink on a plane, drink when sad.

Shall I forbid country music?

If you’re forbidding country songs that describe getting intoxicated, I’m afraid you’ll have to forbid the song “Old Town Road” by none other than Lil Nas X.

No it doesn’t but it does talk about cheating.

So yes. Country music lyrics are horrible for children. Are we forbidding country music too?

Yes it does: “Riding on a tractor / Lean all in my bladder.”

If you’re ignorant about a particular subject, no need to speak on it.

This reminds me of the moment that my HS physics teacher told me it was inappropriate to sing “I’m so excited, and I just can’t hide it, I’m about to lose control and I think I like it” after I got A’s on test.

Me: Why?

It’s obviously about an orgasm!

Me: oh great now I’m going to think of you and orgasms when I hear Whitney Houston.

Stop teaching kids stuff they don’t know or care about.

Yes cough syrup and candy you think kids know that.

If you want to compare that video to country music videos about drinking and smoking have at it. It is a false equivalency.

But you can’t articulate what a person will do if they watch the video.

Will they try to have sex with satan in hell, is that your concern?

I’m worried kids drink too much and kids die every year in college drinking too much and there are studies that show country music listeners have a higher rate of alcoholism than the gen pop.

Can you articulate what will happen to society/children if they watch this video?

DP. When your kids were young children, did you expose them to pornography? Why not? Can you articulate what would happen?

There is no pornography in the video. So you just don’t like it because he is gay and black. White men encouraging drunkenness is fine with you.

Got it.

You don’t want to answer the question, do you?

He doesn’t, actually. I can guess what particular aspect of his appearance you find objectionable, though!

+1. He's objectively good looking. If you find him ugly, you don't like him being black. That's your problem. Go pray to whatever you need to get over that.

Np. I’m black with black female friends who are dating or married to black men. None of us find him attractive or even cute. He is not “objectively good looking.” Maybe to white women this is true. He definitely doesn’t have the ugliest face. That remark is rude. But it’s hard to say someone doesn’t find him attractive just bc he’s black.

That's quite the racist observation. Oh, but I forgot, only whites can be racists.

Mmmkay...do you just like to throw that word around?

You’re seriously fine with your 6 year old watching? It has clear sexual content along with violence and scary themes for children.

He listened to the Christians, ended up in hell, and discovered it was just a big gay orgy

Love it.

The whole shoe controversy is super interesting. Lil Nas X teamed up with an artist collective/company based out of NYC that take regular Nikes (and other brands), modifies them, and then re-sells them as collectible art pieces. Nike and the other brands have allowed this to go on for years. Each shoe "drop" comes with it's own specially designed website to hype the sale.

In fact, this same company modified Nike's a few years ago to promote a Bible verse and put holy water in the sole. But now? Nike is suddenly offended and is suing the artist collective/company.

Their website: https://mschf.xyz/
The special website created just for Lil Nas X's "Satan Shoes": https://satan.shoes/

Great article on the facts from a fashion trade rag: https://www.thefashionlaw.com/nike-is-suing-mschf-for-trademark-infringement-dilution-over-satan-shoes/

I think there is a good chance Nike could lose this case, given that they have allowed others to customize and resell shoes for a long time. That era is probably over.

This is interesting from a legal perspective. I'm curious if The Satanic Temple will step up with legal support.

Agree PP...Nike taking a stand on this now is very interesting. There is a whole industry around customizing and reselling shoes...will this lawsuit by Nike lead to the end of this industry.

Meh. Sodom and Gomorrah did it better and first. Aztecs and other ancient cultures as well. Nothing new under the sun.

What isn’t happening? Parents aren’t parenting?

So? What exactly will happen..,, btw I never became a holler even though I listened to Roxanne. What exactly is going to happen?

Also, btw.... a very high % of country songs talk about drinking too much and getting wasted... which is actually a huge issue in the US. Do you suggest no kids listen to country?

Curious as to why you added "which is actually a huge issue in the US" are you not living here? Strange addition.

"i spent my entire teenage years hating myself because of the sh** y'all preached would happen to me because I was gay. So i hope u are mad, stay mad, feel the same anger you teach us to have towards ourselves.”

That is a beautiful sendoff to those righteous people who preach morality and kindness on one hand and then act another way. He has a new fan over here. *chef's kiss"

And to have this coming from the rapping community is another big step. This is the kind of ballsy thing Kanye should/could have done if he hadn't gotten sidetracked by religion (!) and stopped taking his meds.

Also, the song is really catchy!

Combined with his letter to himself at age 14, it’s so touching.

If you haven’t been a young, closeted gay in a religious community, you have no idea how much pain we grow up with. If you tell us we’re going to hell, we can only heal by saying — ok! And I’ll do it looking fabulous.

I'm glad you mentioned this letter, I hadn't understood it when I read it the first time. I didn't know that Montero is actually his given name, and that he truly was writing to himself and not some prior boyfriend whose gayness he'd promised to keep secret.

The fact that he gave the song his own name, acted every single part in the video, essentially kissed himself ... that's lovely. Good for him. I just find it really moving to show self-acceptance like that when this issue has been such a sticking point in the rap world for so long.

Most kids pull up porn on their computer and phone.

So yes, they are “exposed” to porn just like I was exposed to “thorn birds”. It’s something you can’t hide from them and you need to have open and honest discussions about it. If you put controls on their computers or phone they will inevitably have a friend that shows it to them. Also your H was stealing his dads porn as a kid, every kids knows where dads Penthouse is.
