Identical short list for PK3 twins:

1. YY (Sibling preference to current student)
2. Shepherd (Not IB but very close commute)
3. SWS
4. Hyde Addison

Also have current YY upcoming 1st grader WL'd for Shepherd, SWS and HA as well

Why even list anyone after YY? They will get in and you won’t have a shot at any other school. Not Swami.

K list:

1. DCB
2. MV 8th st.
3. Maria Reed
4. Powell
5. Breakthrough Takoma

My daughter is currently in PK4 at Stokes for Spanish. I honestly probably won't even switch, but was nervous for some reason and decided to play the lottery this year. Swami what are your thoughts?

Okay Swami, can you help me feel better? I was feeling pretty confident but I’m getting more nervous as the day goes on.

PK4:
1. Whittier (IB)
2. Cap City
3. EL Haynes
4. DCB
5. Mundo 8th
6. West
7. Barnard
8. CC Brightwood
9. Truesdell
10. LaSalle-Backus
11. CC Petworth
12. Sela

I know we are likely to get into our IB, which is our first choice, but I’m nervous because it’s for PK4 and the application said they anticipated 0 seats next year.
Thank you Swami!

The way you ranked this was crazy.

1. SWS
2. Maury
3. Peabody
4. Ludlow-Taylor
5. TR Young
6. TR 4th
7. J.O. Wilson
8. Miner (IB)

Swami says you'll get in under the wire to TR Young... and then complain about kids in PK3 doing worksheets.

Swami thinks you should have put YY 4th if that's where it is in your true preference. Your 1st grader will get into Shepherd in 4th grade... if you hadn't moved to the part of Rockville that calls itself Bethesda by then

Swami says its not very fun to Swami a sure bet. You'll enjoy Whittier... and start fretting on the Elementary forums anonymously in 1st grade.

Swami says your child will get into MV8, but you will choose to stick with the trudge up the Stokes hill over having your kid trudge to the playground at Turkey Thicket.

Out of curiosity, what is it that you like so much about Whittier? We are also IB for Whittier but I wasn't able to make it to the open houses. I feel like it is a sure thing for us since they didn't have too many people on the waitlist for PK3 last year, so interested to hear your perspective since you were obviously impressed. We have heard a lot of neighbors say that they are/would be fine with having their kids there, but I haven't heard of anyone say it is their top choice.

Swami, there were zero OOB slots at Shepherd for 1st last year. Also, zero OOB PK3 kids got in last year, not even OOB with sibling so where would that leave siblings? They put YY first place anyway so won't even be entered into the lottery for Shepherd, SWS, or Hyde since they have guaranteed admission for YY.

This is the list of someone that is either (1) fairly happy where they are so would only move for something better, or (2) a backup plan to move or go private if the lottery doesn’t work out.

Ding ding ding. Currently private and very happy, but moved from MD to DC and will consider a change to public for a good school. Figured that it didn't hurt to try and if we get in, we'd only lose our deposit.

Not swami - There are 160 current k'ers at Lafayette. That means that there will be no space in 1st next year. OP, next time maybe order the list based on current enrollment? You have Lafayette so high, that you may have wasted a spot. I do hope you get in to one because I love your optimism. I wish I had it.

Lotteries work from the bottom up, no? So if we get into Lafayette anything below it would no longer be considered. Maybe I misunderstood the process.

We felt the school was very warm and welcoming when we went to the open house, and we have friends who are very happy there and rave about how great the administration is-particularly the low staff turnover rate. DH and I also really liked the diverse nature of the student body and the community feel, wed like DS to feel like he’s in school with our neighbors. We are both DCPS graduates and would prefer to send our kid to a traditional (vs charter) public school for a number of reasons. Not knocking charters-I listed some too

My (very short) list for PK3 is:

Thomson
SWW - Francis Stevens
Hyde-Addison

We have no preference for anything and chose strictly based on our commute (we live in Upper NW where there are no PK3s). My personal swami guess is that we'll be in day care for another year...

Did you work across the hall from me until very recently? If so, I stick with my original prediction and in person Swamiing that you'll be in daycare with the CBOC recommendation.
