Just noticed the top flagships (besides in Ca) are all in red/purple states rather than blue ones

All of this political hand-wringing is ruining our nation.

if the schools are great and GOP politicians decide to cut education funding for said schools, that impacts the quality of teaching and other resources for said school, not?
If the schools are great, but a co-ed can be thrown in jail for having a miscarriage, that seems problematic, no?

Well then just don't go! For the life of me, I can't figure out why people from other parts of the country scream and cry about the politics of the sunbelt states, yet still move down here in droves.

Guys, if you don't like the values and politics associated with area DON'T MOVE HERE!

Do like the pilgrims. Go to new places and mold them as you wish

But, Doesn’t CA have an anti affirmative action statute?

Prop 209, but what does that have to do with the thread? CA pubic univ got around it by admitting top x% from every HS.

How is that "getting around" affirmative action?

Good. You should have an equal opportunity to go to a public university in your state regardless of what high school you attend. Parents should keep policies like this in mind when choosing where to live, be open-minded and not segregate into certain areas. Most kids have zero say in where they happen to go to high school. Public universities exist to serve kids living in every single part of the state.

Because if you accept the top X% from Compton HS (and many other similar schools) which is essentially 100% URM...you know that those kids will all be URMs without specifically asking for their race.

Nope, the same % rule applies to kids living in rural eastern California.

See: WI, NC, GA, FL, TX, VA, MI

Then Gov Walker and the GOP gutted Wisconsin. Evers has done a great job of restoring funding.

Texas is losing good applicants for professors and current professors over the tenure fights: https://www.texastribune.org/2023/04/20/texas-senate-tenure-universities/

DiSantis is gutting Florida public education, particularly at the college level.

Michigan is solidly blue now.
Virginia is basically a blue state that had a charleton win on lies for Governor.

UNC is a abberation and I wouldn't consider GA to be in the same class as the CA, MI and other schools.

So how is FL cutting money from schools? I thought they increased spending for k-12 and colleges.. We toured UF and it seems that is not lacking for anything.

Except the better professors are leaving and others not applying because of the new tenure rules.

It’s really just a cycle, and the “top flagships” will evolve as admissions get more competitive. For example, I know of at least 8 high-stats kids from this area (5 from the same HS) headed to CU Boulder this year; if CU continues to draw high-stats OOS students with its merit scholarships, then it will become the next “top flagship”.

That perpetual FL troll can’t even spell let alone support a claim with facts. Ignore

So many problems with the implied premise of this topic

A. Cherry picking a handful of good public universities. But leaving out UWashington, UIUC, etc.
B. What makes a state “red” or “blue”. Yes VA has a GOP governor but that’s only because it has a 1 term limit. It has voted Dem in every national election since 2008. Georgia has 2 democratic senators. You can’t go by control of the state houses because so many of those are gerrymandered heavily.
C. Conservativism and progressivism don’t really have fixed meanings. Take free trade. Used to be considered a conservative stance. But recently it’s Dems that support trade agreements and eschew protectionism. Policies are viewed as conservative or progressive based on which party espouses them. Right now, until the GOP proves otherwise, it is the party of little more xenophobia and racism and “owning the libs”
D. Where is causation? Florida universities, if they continue to thrive at all, may very well do so DESPITE DeSantis. Not because of him.

I will say that Hope and Zell Miller have been great for UGA and GT. It’s definitely worked at keeping some of the best students in state, which was part of the purpose. And the reputations of both schools have soared recently.

I don’t understand your point…yes it applies to all schools…but if it applies to schools that are nearly 100% URM it will yield you lots of lots of URMs without asking for their race.
