My grandma came from a very religious family and had an out of wedlock son in 1938. She kept her son. She was 19. She had a lifelong relationship with both her parents and siblings, and also her children. She married and had more kids, my father being one.

Op’s details that mom was states away but somehow the church caused her to give her child up…and then is staying she wishes her mom could
have aborted her. ok.

Sounds like you really don’t understand any of this.

It was about what society forced on women.

This. I am OP’s mother’s age. Her mother’s difficulties had nothing to do with Baptists -it had to do with prevailing mores of the time. I used to volunteer at Florence Crittenden homes. That’s where my high school friends who got in trouble. The homes served all faiths and then arranged for adoptions. It is what was back then. Blaming the Baptists is not helpful. Back the. It was almost every religion, especially Catholic and orthodox Christian churches. Lots of young girls disappeared, had their babies and put them up for adoption

aka "home for unwed mothers". There used to be one here in DC. Another person I know was sent to live with a good, catholic family during her pregnancy, doing housework to earn her keep. She was known as "the bad girl upstairs".

She gave the child up for adoption, as expected, and later thinks she met the child, adopted by an acquaintance of hers. The kid had the right birthday and had curly, tangly hair just like my friend had at that age. I later heard that this person adopted a child herself.

We are talking years of brainwashing. Pregnancy out of wedlock means giving the baby up to be raised by a decent family. Then, you repent of your whorish ways and pray for forgiveness. You won’t ever be forgiven. Ever.

It is a cult, friends. If you are a member of the SBC and haven’t experienced abuse, I’m so glad. Do not discount the many who were horribly abused.

I grew up in a Southern Baptist church and my experiences were vastly different. While I recognize that PP experienced horrific abuse and that her church knowingly allowed it, my church was completely different, and I believe the official position of the national organization would have condembed the abuse as well. While her church may have been a cult and called itself Southern Baptist, that does not mean that it was representative of Southern Baptist Churches are that the Southern Baptist Convention is a cult or condoned abuse.

In terms of gender equity, I’ll agree that growing up, traditional SB churches didn’t have women pastors or deacons, although they held other leadership positions. Even then, there were more progressive churches that did have women deacons and pastors, and I think it is much more common today.

In terms of voting, there were quarterly business meetings where anyone (member or not) could attend, and any church member (regardless of gender or age - including minors) could speak and vote.

While the church opposed extramarital sex, some of my friends as teenagers got pregnant. Some chose to keep their babies, some gave them up for adoption (there was no pressure from the church, but I have no way of knowing if they received familial pressure). In any case, the church loved the babies we got to know and continued to love the mothers who were kids themselves.

Yes, praying for forgiveness of sin was encouraged, but extramarital sex was never singled out. We were taught that we were all sinners, that we should judge not lest we be judged, and that all sins would be forgiven if we repented and asked tor forgiveness (this would include sexual sins, although those as mentioned above, weren’t singled out).

I had never heard of Bill Gothard or IBLP, so taking PP’s advice, I researched them and according to Wikipedia, IBLP is a non-denominational church and Bill Gothard is an American Christian minister. From a very cursory search, I could find no link to either from the Southern Baptist Convention, although there may be one I missed. Again from an extremely cursory view, this organization does seem more reflective of PP’s experiences, and may indeed be a cult, just not Southern Baptist.

Not, OP- but Interesting that you mention this. Recently I've just started learning more about this group and the fundie movement. Why it's important? Their goal is to infiltrate our legislature to return laws to protect the patriarchial, Christian, white, nuclear heterosexual family.

And it's working.

BapTists don’t have that kind of power. Fundamentalists don’t either. I think you need to expand your sources of reading

Oh really? Why do we have religious fundamentalidm laying the groundwork RIGHT NOW in local, state, and national elections and laws? Did you read the Roe leaked document? Roe vs. Wade is about to be overturned. Laws are also being developed right now to OVERRIDE individual state's laws for continued support for abortion if Row is overturned. Legislation has been introduced regarding birth control, the morning after pill, and even miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy. Laws are being introduced that criminally implicate not only the woman involved but anyone even tangentially related to the event- the Uber driver, a spouse, anyone who had prior knowledge. Hotines to report any activity are actually estsblished for the purpose of finding any or all parties involved. Parenthood is losing funding for basic health care.

School board races are flooded with rhetoric about so called CRT indoctrination, sexuality curriculum of any kind, and basic history. And they are winning. Florida is leading the way.

Are you quite sure now? Have you been living under a rock?

The entire goal of the southern baptist church (and remember, the Duggars are southern baptist) is to create a Christian nation. Christian public schools. Christian laws based on “biblical truths”. One nation under a white, cis, straight, male Jesus. Run only by white Christian men. Head of household voting only. There will be no place for others. No tolerance for differences. That’s the sole focus of Christian Fundamentalism. If you believe differently, you are (1) A member of the cult. Or (2) In deep denial. I was there. I lived it as did thousands of others. They are trying to create a Christian Taliban. They believe God literally gave them dominion over the country.

OP---I agree with the PPs who are pointing out that how pregnant, unmarried women were socially treated (by their families and society in general) was much different over 50 years ago. And I don't think that your revenge fantasy regarding denouncing your biological grandparents and their chosen denomination will bring you closure or comfort. I agree with the other PPs recommending that you work through all this anger with a therapist, because it seems to be harming you far more than you have the capacity to harm the ones you hold responsible. I became a mother via adoption (though under much different circumstances) and one of my biggest fears for my children is that the emotional pain from the treatment they received from their biological family will adversely and continuously affect them throughout their lives. That is giving far too much power over your current life to people who don't deserve it. I hope so much that you can find some peace.

You absolutely would have had to been living under a rock to not know any of what was in the post. It was a much more civil way to point that out instead of calling you uneducated or any other unkind statement regarding your cognitive state. No one here is trying to change an opinion. What was written was information. It was entirely factual, and was information you did not have, for reasons that are incomprehensible. And, you are the one who suggested the first poster needed to read more sources- that was insulting, and incorrect, so please refrain from lecturing others in etiquette.

Now that we are here, please watch the acceptance speech of the Pa Repub primary candidate, Maistriano and tell us again how fundamentalism isn't trying to grab the legislature.

Please, take some Valium and also learn some common civility. Would you want your histrionic posts to be a signboard on your front yard? That’s a good yardstick.

Literally nothing here that is uncivil -except possibly the question about living under a rock(?) But, here's the thing- do you? Do you live under a rock because otherwise how would you not know these things? I would go back to your comment and decide who is not civil when you question posters sources of reading. And, the funny thing is, you haven't read or seen or heard anything that has been going on. You are the one who needs questioning, and your response has something to do with civility. Are you kidding everyone here? Are you trolling?

** hey, also..so, ARE you the beagle poster? I'm guessing yes.

If so, let's review what civility and humanity is.

Who is the beagle poster? No, that’s not me. I was responding to the shrill caps and the gratuitous rock statement.

And I’m pro-choice. If you want to change opinions, start by being civil.

A little maturity wouldn’t go amiss, either. What’s with the dumb hashtags?

Try to catch up here, dear.
