| I think the reason the parents have such high profile, expensive lawyers, is that the defense is being funded by someone with deep pockets. Maybe the NRA? Would the attorneys have to disclose that? |
We’ll find out if/when they post bail. They definitely don’t have the money. |
No idea but the lawyers defended Larry Nassar. 🤢 |
Perhaps. I am wondering what will come of this. Not at all saying the parents are innocent, but I am wondering how they will substantiate criminal charges beyond negligence. As far as I know, there is no legal requirement of how you must store a weapon in your house you own. Are teen gang members' parents that have a teen grab a home weapon and commit a crime charged? Is a spouse that commits suicide with their other spouses weapon charged? Not debating the parents terrible decisions, just wondering how the law will work with this |

Sheriff is on the record saying he wished the school would have contacted him.
“Bouchard suggested the school should have notified authorities when the Crumbleys were summoned. "At that point we would have loved to have been looped in," he said.” He also doesn’t seem to think the parents were planning to self surrender like their attorneys claim. “ "When the tip came in, the person was apparently outside smoking, and they pretty much ran away," Bouchard said. "Where they were and how they were seems to support the position they were hiding, and they weren't looking for surrendering at that point."” Per NBC News https://apple.news/AWWNirSXST1OViWUJiIp91A |
I think it’s more that they knew they bought him the gun, that he had access to it, and when the school called them in and told them about the disturbing drawing and internet search, they said nothing to the school about the existence of the gun, didn’t ask their child about the gun or even look for it, and refused to take him home. THOSE actions are what got them in trouble. If he just randomly took the gun and did this with no warning I don’t think they would be charged. |
Vast majority of teen gang members don’t acquire guns from family members. They acquire guns from fellow gang members. And the prosecutors DO go after those who supply guns illegally to gang members, if they can prove chain of custody. Only middle class white kids acquire guns from family to shoot up their schools. Teens who commit suicide by gun almost always acquire the gun from family. Frankly, I think you’re crazy to have a gun in a home with a teenager. Their brains are so prone to terrible decision making, not understanding long term consequences of actions. Odds of gun suicide spike dramatically with the existence of a gun in the household. |
I don't know the details, but there was already a case where a parent was charged and I believe received jail time for their child-killing someone with their gun. |
Agree. Their child was in crisis and they didn’t even respond. Maybe they could have saved their son from throwing his life away. I don’t know how they are still living with themselves. Aside from the culpability to the victims’, they failed their own child. |
Domestic violence odds go way up too. Just a bad idea all around. No one gets over the death of a child. But if my child died like this, I think my anger over it would destroy me. I don’t think I could ever let it go. |
It’s sort of a chicken/egg dilemma - are those who own guns more prone to committing domestic violence? I don’t think the guns causes the domestic violence, but rather both of those elements are indicative of a broader pattern of terrible decision making and lack of emotional regulation. In other words, the people most desirous of guns - outside of a professional setting (military/police) - are very likely those who are least able to handle the responsibility of guns on both a practical and emotional level. This is why we need to study guns violence!!! |
I’m the person you quoted and I agree! Especially what I bolded. |
Also, while perhaps the rate of domestic violence in houses with guns is the same as without, the domestic violence is more likely to be deadly in the houses with guns. Same for suicides. |
There must be such disconnect between these parents and Ethan. The fact that they would go on the run when he's in prison even further emphasizes it. |
You’re thinking like a sane, rational, concerned, loving parent. That’s not who these people are. Their motto is “don’t get caught,” so they were foolishly trying to run. They don’t have the brains or other resources for that, but again, they’re not rational people. |
