How do I tell the family I don’t want to work over 42.5 hours per week? RSS feed

If you do talk to other nannies, I think you'll find that 8:30 - 5 is a fairly short shift for a full time nanny. You may not be able to replicate that in another position. Apart from the WAHPs, almost any job involves some commute and 8-9 hours in the office, so 8:30 - 5 is not going to work for most in this area. My husband is in the office from 6:45 AM - 5:30 PM; I leave 7-ish and get home ~ 5:00, so your preferred schedule wouldn't work for us or most of the office workers, attorneys, business owners, doctors, we know.

WHAT?!? First of all, you need a contract. That is crazy that you don't have one. I guarantee both your bosses have contracts with their employers.

NP, but um, what? Professionals don't have contracts unless there's some kind of legal thing.

Um, what? I'm a lawyer and I've had a contract for every job I've ever had at both law and accounting firms and with the government. Not sure what kind of "professionals" you know.

LA nanny here- All my jobs have had contracts. If you're not legally allowed to work here then that's the consequence for your choice to cheat the system. No contract and no benefits. No sympathy!! I'd love to work in Paris as a nanny but I'm not legal to work in the EU. If you're not legal then don't complain!

Just read further and saw you're legal but not paying taxes... EVEN WORSE!!! You get what you deserve!

I never said I don't pay taxes, people assumed I didn't.

So, did you talk to them?

Why are you still dancing around this? Do you pay all taxes owed or not? You could dispel the confusion by making that clear instead of making it sound like people misread you. I honestly don't know how that will impact your job prospects if you have to leave this one. But it affects how sympathetic people on this forum are to your situation.

I am on pay roll, all my taxes are withheld. There happy? Jeez. I never knew it was any of your business but there ya go and yes I spoke With them.

P.s I don’t need any sympathy from anyone nor did I ask for it. Lesson learned: never post on a forum again because these nanny and moms are too much

I know, the tax thing should’ve never been a focus.

So, what happened when you spoke with them? This topic has been going on for so long now that I’m really curious what everyone had to say during this conversation, lol!

op here, I told them that I understand they need to work on occasion past 5, and I am more then happy to work until 5:30 everyday with OT paid after 4:30 and with enough notice (not same day) I told them that staying late was interfereing with my personal life (like running errands, going to the doctor, etc) I told them my max would be 9 hours per day with at least 1 day of notice working until past 5:30. Of course emergencies come up but I asked them that I wouldn’t be able to stay if they asked me to stay say at 4:30 they asked me to stay until 5:30. It was a long conversation and I think they’re upset but I respect my schedule and I am ALWAYS able to work from 8:30-5 how we originally agreed. Because that’s the time I allotted to be at work. Anything passed that, would be courteous of me to stay. I have been very accommodating and had said yes in the past even if I had plans after work

That's fine. You can tell them that, and that can be your limit. But they may choose to fire you and find someone who can accommodate their schedule.

I agree. She can also decide to quit and find another family who doesn’t need her 8+ hours.

Well, maybe next time they’ll be clear about their actual scheduling needs before hiring anyone.
