Reformed Runner Seeking New Exercise

If I want an intense cardio work out I do spinning. I also bike to work 30mi round trip and a spin class kicks my ass harder that that.

I also find the stairmaster a killer cardio work out.

I dind the elliptical a very mild workout. It just does not get my HOUR as high and my sweat as heavy.

I hurt my knee last year. I thought ellipticals were too easy until I tried the Cybex Arc Trainer at my gym. It's the machine that contestants use on The Biggest Loser tv show, believe it or not. I figured that if it was good enough for Jillian, I should try it. And it really works.

My knee is better now so I alternate running and the Arc Trainer. I wish I liked Power Yoga more, but I just don't. Maybe I should try it again. Who has the best beginner classes in NW DC? Any suggestions?

Not op, but a few follow up questions: is down dog power yoga? It's the only studio in Georgetown so i didn't really look at other types. Is there a good yoga DVD I can use while traveling?
Personally I prefer the teachers other than Colin, just because he is so philosophical. But I think they are all good and I like that they mix up the instructors so it's a little different every time.

I have the same kneww issues. I did the elliptical for a while, but also found it a little to easy. Spin is just not my thing. Honestly what works for me is the trusty treadmill. I walk at around a 4.1 at a VERY steep icnline. I do that for 40 minutes and feel as spent as a run.

Just a word about Power Yoga.....I am a marathon runner who runs a high weekly mileage. I also hold a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a first degree in Karate. I am in really good shape.

I took my first power yoga class last week and it Kicked.My.Ass. I had to stop at least three times during the class. And the next day I was sore in places I didn't even know existed!

Can't wait to take another class! But if your instructor is anything like mine, be prepared to work hard!

What class/instructor did you go to? I'm looking for a kick-ass power yoga class. I know power yoga can be incredibly taxing, having done it before, but I haven't found a class in D.C. yet... (moved here last year)

Current runner here. Power yoga is awesome! I do it twice a week at Gold's Gym. (with gym yoga, they do have some good teachers but you have to experiment to find them and be flexible about the location.) I also recommend the arc trainers another poster mentioned - i've used the Arc (with the moveable arms) as cross-training for running, plus I used it to rehab an IT band issue, and it kept me in decent shape. Also might check out some Body Combat/Boxing type classes to keep you from getting bored. that's a good calorie burn.

Yes, it is power yoga. You don't like Colin?? I guess that's what makes the world go round and keeps class space available, and sometimes I don't take much from what he says, but when he hits it, he really hits it. "All that was done was all that needed to be done." Plus, isn't he handsome to look at???? Yum.

I wore my Polar HR monitor to Down Dog a few times, and each time my HR was at 85% of it's max or more. I burned 400 calories more in each class and I am not overweight, so that's a very good burn.

What teachers do you like?

Yoga DVDs: I've tried a few and can't say I LOVE any of them. Probably the best one I have found is Bob Harper's Yoga For The Warrior.

I don't like Patty's classes. She has too much of a militant edge to her for my taste. Don't care for Alison. I like Kelly. Preston is not at Georgetown often, but he will slay you just by looking at you. WOW.

I'm not sure I understand the recommendations to "go to a gym", "go to a yoga studio", etc... Why not get a bike, and just ride that. It will double as a form of transportation, and you can go straight from the house. No need to drive around all over the place and meet some arbitrary schedule. Just like running only better on the knees!

This is fun. I'm a different PP who also goes to DDY. I love Colin and his "All that was done was all that needed to be done" line. I also think he is cute. Totally agree re: Allison - she is the most "out there" from my perspective. Kelly is good - although now she talks like Patty. Preston is sooooo tough and makes me want to work so much harder. I go back and forth between the Bethesda and Georgetown studios. I like Bethesda better but G-town is closer to my office, but their 6pm classes make me so stressed out it almost defeats the benefits of the yoga practice.

I go back and forth on Patty. I did the Commit to It program this winter and when I was going through it, I really liked her. I think it is hard to attend her classes in the summer when she is telling you not to drink water- like, ok, what am I supposed to do?

I have to say, the Commit to It program changed my arms/back. I lost 8 pounds in 6 weeks (and I'm in pretty good shape!). I barely supplemented with any other form of cardio - just yoga for 40 days. It was amazing.

Yup, Colin is good eye candy. Were you there when he talked about the Japanese author who sent his novel in without keeping a copy? Or when he talked about his friend losing his credit card?? I love how he says "one more quick set, it will be over before you know it.". Or how we should trust our legs and we're stronger than we think. And how we're very good at hanging on to things and not very good at letting go. "If you have a health spine, you will have a happy life!".
I love when he deadpans, "Your hair looks great."

Preston is killer. He's like everyone say, "DAMN, I look good!". His classes are brutal. And he just laughs the whole time.

I can't believe how many of us are here! I too dropped weight there. Look, I always wear two Old Navy camis of different colors so my nipples don't show thru, Lulu pants, and I have 2-3 bottles of water. Blue mat. Lots of grunting. 5'2" blond hair. Please say hello. My name is Amy. Oh, I also like Beth's classes.

Zumba can be hard on the knees if you wear the wrong shoes and don't stretch enough. The people who have knee problems in my class just replace the jumpy moves with a modification.

Because this is not realistic for everyone. I think people who bike in the city and on busy streets are nuts and asking to become road kill.

I'm an avid biker and live next to the W&OD and it even freaks me out when I'm alone. A female biker was just attacked on it a few weeks ago. The perp has not been found. Each year there are incidents like this.

Also, how is one supposed to bike in the elements? How does one avoid living life on an "arbitrary schedule"? Some of us work and have small children, so our schedules are anything, but arbitrary.

BTW, I bike to work 3xs a week. Do you have any idea what it is like to bike 30 miles round trip lugging around a laptop, clothes, and toiletries? It takes a massive amount of coordination and dedication. It is not for everyone and if I did not LOVE biking (which most people don't) in no way would I find it fun.

Little River Yoga is starting classes in Arlington this fall. (I'm related to one of the teachers, but have never taken their classes.)
