DCPS students shafted again - sign petition to keep Jelleff field public

Let’s sum up your position. No Maret can not have exclusive use right of Jellef because my kid does not go to Maret. My kid goes to Hardy so Hardy should exclusive use right to Jellef. I know the property is not part of the school system but that does not matter. All DC Government resources are there for my private use. I want what I want! Screw everyone else!
Do you know where Hardy teams play and practice now? Takoma Recreation Center. Banneker Recreation Center. Randolph Recreation Center. Do you know what all of those Recreation Centers have in common? They're all run by DPR. There's no question whether DCPS kids can use DPR rec centers, the question is whether kids at Hardy can use the one that happens to be across the street from their school instead of having to take Metro to ones halfway across the city.

I'd like to find out what the deal is with Guy Mason Rec Center, which is just a few blocks up Wisconsin from Jelleff.

The DPR-DCPS distinction is a complete red herring.
But most of the Hardy kids actually live closer to the rec centers you named. So it’s actually more convenient for them to get home afterwards.
That is completely not true. How ridiculous!
Huh? The school is 73% OOB. It’s kinda actually true...
Do you know that this is a big city? Many people live far from Hardy *and* far from Takoma.

Takoma is probably more convenient for Maret kids than Hardy kids, as many of the Maret kids live in-boundary for Deal or, worse, live in Maryland.

Would the kids attending Hardy prefer the athletic fields at their actual IB middle schools?

Or perhaps that would work for the Maret kids?

Why do write with such disdain for the Hardy kids? It really seems to bother you that Hardy kids, like Maret kids, play sports and don’t care for endless commutes.

Because of the irony. The Hardy kids are a major source of overcrowding at Wilson that prevents my kids adequate use of the same types of amenities you are whining about. The only difference, most of the Hardy families lotteried INTO this situation. Look, DCPS has spent millions on pristine fields at under enrolled schools. If it’s that important, agenda your IB school.

So the answer to overcrowding at Wilson (which I agree is a problem) is to have a small private school, including kids from Maryland and Virginia, use Jelleff field? Huh.

If it makes you feel better, Hardy is probably now half in-bounds. Some research could figure it out.

According to DCPS's website, in the 2017-18 school year, Hardy was 27% in-boundary students. http://profiles.dcps.dc.gov/Hardy+Middle+School So I guess it's possible that 23% more in-boudary students started attending Hardy in the last 18 months, but probably doubtful.

Of course that's not the answer. But by choice you are now experiencing what Ward 3 parents have been experiencing at their schools for more than a decade: inadequate and overcrowded facilities. DCPS is deliberately forcing you to make the same decision parents WOTP make in droves every year: leave, go private, or stomp your feet until you tire and go away. Welcome to the party. The grass is not always greener on this side of town.

Just looked at our child's Stoddert Soccer schedule and our game is at 4pm. Typicall games are all before 2pm.

Guess Maret has access on Saturday's as well.

I live in-bounds for Hardy. I am very lost on what your point is.

Do you actually have an opinion about DPR selling out Jelleff? Or would you be better off on a thread about OOB feeder rights?

Don’t know about today, but Maret’s agreement does give them several Saturdays in both Spring and Fall. Perhaps they sublet some.

In the original agreement, five Saturdays exclusive use in the fall. And two full weeks exclusive use in August. What does the new one say?

Maret doesn't 'sublet' anything--DPR provides permits for hours. Perhaps someone else supplied permit requests before Stoddert did, which would make your Saturday game at a different time?
Anonymous
Or perhaps maret is using the field on those Saturdays. Maybe Stoddert parents will also voice their displeasure about Maret getting exclusive use of the field during prime hours.
