DCPS students shafted again - sign petition to keep Jelleff field public

Anonymous
DPR has apparently signed off for a second time on a decade-long contract with Maret to give them continued exclusive rights to Jelleff field, a public DPR. It’s sad and crazy and infuriating. So Maret agrees to put down new turf and put up a new fence and pays cash (which likely enriches corrupt public employees) and our public school students are prevented from using a public facility right across the street. I would much prefer that my tax dollars be allocated to take care of the field so public school children can actually use this public resource. My Hardy student has to travel miles across the city for practice and games. Why? This stinks to high heaven. Please sign the petition demanding that this closed door decision be reversed.

Do you not have a field at your school?

No. Hardy has a small field that is not sufficient for baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse or football. All sports offered by the school. It is absurd and hurtful that dcps and DPR don’t try at all to do right by the kids. They’d rather have Maret deal with the turf and fence (which is done for the benefit of...wait for it...Maret) and accept a $250k cash payment which lines who knows whose pockets than fund Jelleff, a Public resource, through public tax dollars. It’s government at its absolute worst. Can dc residents sue?

Sad Sad, why do they keep doing this?

Market kids need to play too, bitterness is unbecoming

It's not the city's job to provide facilities for families that have opted out of the public school system, or for families that don't live in the city.

What do you mean, "too"? They're the only ones.

The city owns it, Maret is paying for it.

Imagine you had some land, and someone said to you, "how about I build on your land and in exchange I get to use it?" Is that a good deal for you?

Seems like opening a field for dc school and public is worth more than the free circulator! Why is the mayor supporting this

We need transit and recreation facilities. Don’t put them against each other.

Your target should be the DME, who is over DCPS and DPR.

DPR has always been like this. When I went to Banneker we weren't allowed to use any of the facilities attached to our building. I never understood why we had to walk past "Banneker Pool," "Banneker Field," and "Banneker Track" to go over to Howard University to use their facilities.
