DCPS students shafted again - sign petition to keep Jelleff field public

Maret got a nice underpriced gift of public land from the Bowser administration. Now LAB gets the same thing. How do we get it through to Bowser that this is no way to run a city?

She doesn’t care. She sees it at serving her own interests. She’s cares about her political power, not her constituents — a dynamic that strangely seems to work.

Per an e-mail from Kishan Putta to the 'hood 'servs, DCPS will allow Hardy (and other DCPS schools) to use the fields at the MacArthur HS campus "for now".

There was word a year or two ago that the Maret administration had finally figured out that stealing a playing field from public school kids wasn't a great look for them and had actually managed to find another (non-public) field to make use of.

Maybe related to this, Kishan also talks of Maret "building a new field" in Chevy Chase. This would seem to imply that Maret vacating Jelleff is at least a few years off. Anyone have more intel?

Its the Episcopal Center in CCDC. Quite the trek from Maret, so surprised the plan was to vacate Jelleff altoghether, but perhaps when you are on a bus already it doesn't matter how far you drive.

You would think that, but Maret families testified that their kids didn’t have time in their schedules to travel far. No lie. (But Hardy kids can bus across town? How can you yell “I’m tone deaf!” without saying those words….)

How are Hardy teams supposed to get to Macarthur?

What's astonishing to me is that DCPS bought the GDS field two years ago and it's taken this long for the bureaucracy to decide that, yes, DCPS teams can use it while they figure out what to do with the rest of the property.

Or maybe I shouldn't be astonished.

According to Google Maps Episcopal Center is 12 minutes from Maret and Jelleff is 8 minutes.

Wait, so now Maret isn't using the Episcopal fields? Are you sure?

Well, its about twice as far, and that distance will be variable on times of day. I'm not a Maret parent, so I have no idea what's really going on, but If I had to pick up a kid at Maret and then a kid at a sports field, I'd want it to be the one that's closer.

Yes, Maret is trying to get fields in Chevy Chase
https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/dc-politics/maret-sports-dc-playing-fields-equity-chevy-chase/2021/11/24/0fabcde6-4bbb-11ec-a1b9-9f12bd39487a_story.html

I respect their political acumen. First get the sleazy deal for Jelleff, then renew it before opposition could coalesce enough. However, they obviously realize there's little chance the current ripoff is going to continue past the current 9 year contract. Since the contract was signed in... 2019 or 20, that gives them some time to find new fields, and build their sports palace in Chevy Chase.

I don’t know if Maret is using Episcopal or not. I just know they felt they *need* Jelleff because they can’t travel to the places that Hardy kids go to access fields. (I don’t consider the Episcopal fields ‘across town’, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Maret did.)

Maret is going to use Episcopal once the fields are built, they're still waiting for Zoning Board approval.

What the PP was alluding to is during the hearings on the Jelleff lease it was pointed out that schools like Hardy and Walls have to travel to fields in other quadrants for home games and practices. The Maret parents said their kids were too busy to travel that far. It was a very tone-deaf moment.

The language is a bit squishy in my opinion but the MOU that ANC 3/4G signed with Maret requires Maret to cease using Jeleff when the new facility is built and in use:

"Maret shall negotiate with DPR to end its agreement for use of the Jelleff field at 3265 S Street - including both Maret's obligations for maintenance of the field and Maret's preferential use of the field - effective when the Athletic Facilities Project is complete and operational. Maret shall report to ANC 3/4G and ANC 2E on its efforts to negotiate an expeditious end to the Jelleff field agreement with DPR."

From:

https://anc3g.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/BZA-Application-No.-20643-MOU-Applicant-and-ANC-Final_executed_March-15-2022.pdf

So an admittal from the school that they currently have preferential use of the field.

That's very odd. Why are those ANCs negotiating that point?

And yes, that language is full of holes. It's a hard negotiation when you don't want to give up the field you took! Even with possible lawyer fees, it'd be worth it to keep the field.

I’m thrilled with the location.
