I scrolled through a couple pages of MPD salaries and at a glance there weren't that many getting into six figures as compared to all the other departments. So I disagree with your statement. Feel free to do your own in depth research and give us the results. A senior police officer hired in 1989 making 76, 000. WooHoo lets cut his pay. From a quick glance the people making over 100K are Lieutenants and above. Plus what looks many civilian jobs in MPD are above 100K.

So try again. And if you want them living in DC you need to double their salaries at least.

Police in DC have not been mired in police violence scandal. Why on earth would we dismantle them? I agree, pay them more. Before they all quit!

Read again: reduce the number of armed police officers. Convert police officer jobs to administrative non-police jobs.

Baltimore has trouble getting enough cops on the street. As a result, all hell has broken loose and Baltimore's rate of murder is worse than El Salvador's. The world doesn't work on happy thoughts and criminals magically deciding to stop doing criminal activity and sing kumbaya if there's less cops around.

This.

I think a lot of BLM activists are spoiled brats who need to go live in an area of the world without police. I've lived in lawless countries where police are powerless, hunted, or non-existent.

The only protection you get is the protection you BUY. Forget it entirely if you're a victim of a casual assault or rape.

Have you ever been to a party of the world that has funny unarmed police in little smart cars? It's refreshing.

When you talk about places with no police and lawlessness because the entire country and economy are a mess you're talking about something completely different.

Have you ever been to a country where you have to pay for your own private protection for your family because of the lawlessness?

It shows that much of it can be replaced by unarmed authorities.

The Mad Max hyperbole is just ridiculous.

You realize the hope of police is deterrence. All of us would prefer never to have police do anything for us because their mere presence deters people from doing bad things.

That sounds nice, but in reality a lot of crime in DC happens within a few blocks of a police station.

There's a lot of research showing other drivers for crime, like poverty.

The teens who robbed a women at gunpoint in the 1500 block of Upshur St NW a couple of weeks ago were not stealing food.

Poverty is about more than food.

No one should be robbed at gunpoint by teens.

You folks live in a dream. "Convert police officer jobs to administrative non-police jobs". Exactly what good are they going to do being a clerk? Alex I'll take stupid ideas for 500.

Obviously if you're new to the force, you don't make six figures. But pretty much everyone who is at least a sergeant makes six figures. I don't care if cops have to live in West Virginia. Why would I care where they live? How they choose to spend their money is their business. I've lived in DC for 20 years, and have multiple degrees from fancy universities, and I don't make six figures. No one cries for me.

I was robbed at gunpoint. Not by a teenager. He was probably in his 20s. The cops didnt do jack. They showed up, wrote down what I told them and I never heard from them again. Cops don't accomplish anything. They don't prevent crimes. They don't solve crimes. I don't know what they do all day.

Take reports, investigate crime scenes. Give them a gun and now they fell like that's been them. "Are you sure you want to file a report?". Bye.

The Defund people are talking about taking certain functions away from the police. https://www.mpd150.com/report/future/

(1) The police spend a lot of their time writing up parking tickets. They don't need to be doing that. The report doesn't mention it, but maybe create a jobs program for high school grads to do this.
(2) They don't need, and aren't particularly effective, in responding to crises like suicide threats, rape and domestic violence. Spin at least some of that off and give the job to trained social workers.

I don't agree with all the Defund recommendations. For example, I don't think they have a solid plan for getting rid of police investigative functions and the courts. Waving your hands at a small community of Indians who have succeeded in doing justice on a personal, small scale wouldn't work for big cities.

To do so, the district should add a referendum to the ballot of the next election and if a majority of residents in a particular area approve of defunding, the district could do so in that area.

I think we could try this out in rich, white areas and see it how it goes.

I guess you didn't read my second sentence. If defunding it to occur, the residents of that area should have a literal vote.

DPW handles the vast majority of parking tickets in DC, not MPD. Your first point does not apply to DC.

DC police don’t write a lot of parking tickets. That’s done by the zealous force form DPW (which is disproportionately deployed in Ward 3 and not Wards 7 and 8 BTW for obvious political reasons). If anything MPD should be doing way more traffic enforcement if DC is going to get serious about pedestrians safety and preventing deaths. MPD is like the only major police department in the country without a dedicated traffic function; without one, it becomes a minor priority. A bonus about making more stops for dangerous driving - cops not infrequently catch people with outstanding arrest warrants through traffic stops.
