Defund MPD - thoughts?

Stop trying to turn nice areas into Baltimore with 300+ murders per year. Thx.

It's sad that you think that's the goal. Consider taking some time to reflect on your bias against Black people. Why can other places minimize police presence but DC and Baltimore can't?

I'm all for taking away their military grade gear, reconsidering what weapons they actually need at what times to protect themselves and others, and ending qualified immunity, the latter of which I think would do a ton. I'm really scared that parts of DC will go the way of Baltimore with unchecked criminality. We also already have basically no traffic enforcement and really need more cops on that beat. Really unsettled by the calls to defund and won't support them.

It's scary because you don't understand how it would work, right? So what about learning about how it would work. Would you commit to reading three serious sources?

If you ask any the pedestrian/bike safety people, they'll tell you that enforcement feels like it would help but is meaningless. Only infrastructure change will matter.

Can anyone point me to information on how many people DC police have killed? I can’t find that information anywhere.

Is killing the threshold? Do you want to know about the people injured, abused, or harassed?

Thanks providing zero information, but Ok then can you point me to information about how many people have been injured, abused, or harassed? I’m just looking for actual information, not your feelings.

My DD started a dialogue with me about defunding the police. I pressed her to find out what she meant and, in reality, it's not to take away all of the police budget but, rather, to reallocate to other purposes. I think a more effective slogan would be: Reduce Reallocate Reform

Baltimore has been a dem city for decades. Conduct of the police is on the local dem admin.

Ask the local Baltimore residents how they feel about anarchy.

Separate the police. Adopt something closer to a European model, which is far from perfect but better than what we do:

Detective, criminal investigators, and similar specialists are in agencies that report to prosecuting attorneys only. They are not part of the uniformed police bureaucracy.

Uniformed cops still exist in multiple agencies, but there are fewer agencies. And since the uniformed agencies do not include the investigative component, these large masses of armed personnel cannot just dominate the entire criminal justice system the way that police do here.

Special police who perform government guarding functions do not have full-blown, all-locations, 24x7 police authority. In many cases, unarmed.

Is this what people mean when they say "abolish" or "refund" the police? Because this makes a ton of sense to me, particularly if you throw in agencies/departments specifically trained to deal with nonviolent mental health and domestic dispute events.

The police are sleazy. We need to look at the whole criminal justice system and implement reforms.
I would like justice system changes for mental illness, youth crime and the controversial practice of kids in adult court, police setup and plea deal injustice, changes to legal aid.

The role of confessions should also be updated

I think a lot of BLM activists are spoiled brats who need to go live in an area of the world without police. I've lived in lawless countries where police are powerless, hunted, or non-existent.

The only protection you get is the protection you BUY. Forget it entirely if you're a victim of a casual assault or rape.

You mean like the police force we currently have who believe that protect and serve applies almost entirely to gentile white people?

Also, what exactly do you think happens in cases of assault and rape for women of color? Do you think police treat it with equal seriousness as the rape of white women (which let's be honest, they already would rather not deal with!).

+1 I think majority of people support this. Defund/Abolish sets up a binary when the answer is more nuanced.
