Here's a Washington Post piece on the movement/ideas. I think that addresses a lot of the concerns brought up here.

Somalia? A third of the states in Mexico? Syria? Essentially no police presence in those places. But plenty of anarchy. Are you trying to sound deliberately stupid? What is your game here? |
I predict we’ve now passed the high-point in home values in the city. |
I hope you're selling and moving. We won't miss you. |
With all due respect to Professor Lopez, she's using words like "defund" and "abolish" to describe what are fundamentally reforms to the police and idea of policing. Words matter. Most Americans are not going to engage in a thought exercise to understand words like "defund" and "abolish" in ways that seemingly run in contradiction to their conventional definitions. Defund: prevent from continuing to receive funds. Abolish: formally put an end to. Again, words matter. There are significant political implications for how these concepts around the police are understood and received by the broader American public. In absolute terms, "defunding" or "abolishing" the police is going to cost the Democrats votes in November. |
It's terrible marketing. |
THIS. |
| Politically, the cops are in a world of trouble. Big changes are coming. |
Then again, once you familiarize with the ideals, you see why the wording makes sense. What we should be asking, is why the bias in media is stopping people from making informed decisions. Sometimes I feel so sick listening to the news. It would be nice if there was a channel dedicated to news instead of telling you what to to think |

Quote from WaPo article today:
"Homicides in the District are up 11 percent from this time last year, when the city recorded a decade-high number of killings." |
Sounds like policing isn't working. |
Yeah they eased up on the thugs |
| “Defund” slogan must have been invented by the Republican National Committee. It’s probably the only thing that has a chance to save them in November... |
words don't matter when you're stupid. extreme, exaggerated words don't matter when you're extreme either. to attempt to talk bad a word like DEFUND and pretend it doesn't mean defund, is just incredulous and ridiculous. You made your pick, not change it or live with it. Don't make up a new definition for a word. Guess you just hope all the leftist you riled up won't later be pissed no defunding actually happened. Even Biden wants to add resources to police forces. |
“ It was the prevailing attitude during slavery.”. Was? You’re aware slavery is still a thing, right? By some definitions there are about 40 million enslaved people in the world, right now. |
