I'd like police officers to be able to live in DC. I don't need more southern MD people coming in making trouble.

it makes no difference to me where cops live.

It matters to me where they live. If they look down on city residents it's pretty different than if they choose to be city residents.

This is stupid.

I think a lot of BLM activists are spoiled brats who need to go live in an area of the world without police. I've lived in lawless countries where police are powerless, hunted, or non-existent.

The only protection you get is the protection you BUY. Forget it entirely if you're a victim of a casual assault or rape.

Cops that are city residents tend to form loyalties to their communities or people. There's a reason why the Romans brought in foreign armies to subjugate new territories.

There's also a reason why NYC was a bloodbath up until the 20th century. It was policed by people with ties to the organized crime families who lived next door to their cousin the cop.

Good news! It's 2020 now. The problem is the police feel so disconnected from urban residents that they kill them themselves in far too large numbers. Different problem. Different solution.

This seems like wishful thinking. The reason police act badly is because they know it is extremely unlikely they will be punished.

That's the only reason? Wow, cool. Can you point me to your research paper where you thoroughly vetted that?

Have you ever been to a party of the world that has funny unarmed police in little smart cars? It's refreshing.

When you talk about places with no police and lawlessness because the entire country and economy are a mess you're talking about something completely different.

I scrolled through a couple pages of MPD salaries and at a glance there weren't that many getting into six figures as compared to all the other departments. So I disagree with your statement. Feel free to do your own in depth research and give us the results. A senior police officer hired in 1989 making 76, 000. WooHoo lets cut his pay. From a quick glance the people making over 100K are Lieutenants and above. Plus what looks many civilian jobs in MPD are above 100K.

So try again. And if you want them living in DC you need to double their salaries at least.

Exactly many countries have to dedicate a branch of the military like army or marines to keep the police in line. Think Mexico, many South American countries, the Phillipines etc.

However, cops aren’t necessary in all situations. More 911 calls should be routed to mental health professionals, social workers, etc. who are trained to deal with specific situations.

But getting rid of cops entirely is mindnumbingly stupid.

OP literally said "Sure, we still need some armed officers"

So do you agree with downsizing? Or really, recategorizing many jobs to be more administrative, like to the people who ticket parked cars?

We need many fewer armed law enforcement officers, and more mental health professionals, social workers, etc. If you call 911 to say a crazy person is on your block ranting (which happens constantly in NYC, where i used to live) a cop shouldn’t be the one responding to that situation. It should be a mental health professional, who knows how to interact with that person and can make the determination about whether that person needs services.

A cop isn’t trained to handle that situation properly and too often ends up escalating it.

+1. I think cops being expected to handle situations they’re not suited for is a huge contributor to the problem.

Personally, I think defunding the police would be a disaster, but I'd be willing to give it a shot. To do so, the district should add a referendum to the ballot of the next election and if a majority of residents in a particular area approve of defunding, the district could do so in that area.

What are you going to do if he starts assaulting people before the "mental health professional" arrives. Then you'll call a cop who if he was dispatched in the first place then there would be no assault.

The important thing, frankly, is the person having the “mental health crises” not be permitted to harm people just going about their business. That’s where the “protect” part comes in.

I think we could try this out in rich, white areas and see it how it goes.

It shows that much of it can be replaced by unarmed authorities.

The Mad Max hyperbole is just ridiculous.

You realize the hope of police is deterrence. All of us would prefer never to have police do anything for us because their mere presence deters people from doing bad things.

That sounds nice, but in reality a lot of crime in DC happens within a few blocks of a police station.

There's a lot of research showing other drivers for crime, like poverty.

+1 We need better anti-poverty programs and meaningful work with benefits and living wages for those in poor communities.
