I do. Every time. No phones. No radio. No talking to people. Just - wait for it! - DRIVING. What a concept, right?!?! Yeah. Never had an accident of any kind in almost 15 years behind the wheel. No accidents, no tickets of any kind, not even any close calls. Not one. How? Because I'm focused on driving the car. Not on the phone. Not music on the radio. Not talking to passengers. Just driving. I don't really even know what my car radio really even sounds like. The only times I've ever used it was sitting in a parking lot or the driveway. The rest of the time it's turned off. Same with the phone, I don't even want to hear it ringing. Same goes for talking. My perfect driving record speaks for itself. |

Texting while driving is dangerous and dumb as it takes your eyes off the road. Talking and listening while driving is not as it does not require your eyes to look away. There are a few nuts on this thread who are going a bit overboard.
In the meantime, this is a highly unenforceable law. Speeding is much easier to enforce and that is rarely enforced. Just about everyone speeds and very few are caught, except in low speed zones with cameras. Go take a ride on the beltway or 95 and you’ll see what I mean. Much ado about nothing. |
Yes, it is. The data show otherwise. Hands-free driving is not safe. Also, Maryland has a no-texting-and-driving law, and it's enforced. (I wish it were enforced more.) A law that is actually enforced is a law that is enforceable. |
|
I can't believe there are places that don't have these laws.
My cousin could pay thousands in fines (just in the ticket.... apparently his insurance company adds to it) and even have his vehicle impounded. |
Correct. The data is indisputable. It makes zero difference whether it's a hands free call or a hand on your phone holding it against your ear. Both are equally distracting, and both are dangerous. It's the act of talking itself that is the distraction. It's using the same parts of your brain that would otherwise be devoted to driving safely. Music and conversations with passengers are also just as unsafe. All three practices are just as dangerous as driving with a BAC of .10. |
Conversations with passengers are not just as unsafe, PP. Unless there are studies you know about that I'm unfamiliar with. |
I agree that if you drive without using your hands it is not very safe. I also drive in Maryland and it is not very safe. Half the cars are doing 80 and the other half 50. Really bad drivers on the beltway there. Not sure if they’re texting or not, but they are unsafe. |
Yeah. Right. The talking while driving study. Sounds like you’re making excuses for drinking and driving. Anyhow, maybe we should just ban driving all together and take the train. Not the bus cuz someone has to drive that on the road and god forbid they might talk to someone. |
You’re a nut. |
I’ve been driving for over 40 years. I use my hands free cell phone system, talk to passengers, listen to the radio, change CD’s, eat and drink while driving and I too have a perfect driving record. |
You're a distracted driver, PP. I've seen you - you're one of the drivers that doesn't see me when I'm standing right there on the corner in broad daylight. |

This debate is moot because autonomous vehicles will become standard in 10-20 years.
|
That's what they were saying, 10-20 years ago. |
Yes, but now we actually have autonomous vehicles on the road and mass-produced vehicles with the capability. Coming to DC: https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/23/21078864/uber-self-driving-cars-washington-dc-testing-manual-autonomous https://www.theverge.com/2018/10/22/18008980/ford-self-driving-car-test-washington-dc-av |
Uh huh. That's what they were saying, 10-20 years ago. Meanwhile, people are driving around right now, paying no attention to their driving. There is nothing supposedly moot about this bill. |
