Some of the most awful, distracted drivers are on bluetooth phonecalls in their car. Using your phone while driving is awful, but hands free doesn't necessarily make people drive better.

I’m the poster you quoted. I agree completely. It’s still distracted driving.

How is chatting on a hands-free telephone call materially different from chatting with a passenger in the back seat?

Uh, because the person in the back seat can see you and halt communication? Tell you you're not paying attention, because they see and experience it? They're actually in the car and have a vested interest in being safe.

Good god I can't believe so many idiots have been given drivers licenses.

In Virginia, it's illegal to text and drive. Now the Commonwealth wants to say "hands off your phone"—for good.
The Virginia House of Delegates will address a proposed bill that aims to ban not just calling, texting, and using your phone while behind the wheel, but even holding your phone in your hand. The bill, HB 874, is currently moving through the Virginia state legislature in Richmond.

Proposed by Del. Jeff Bourne (D-Richmond) this month, the bill would explicitly declare it unlawful for any "motor vehicle driver"... to "hold a personal mobile communications device."
How its this a good bill? We need to call our Del and tell them that we should be allowed to use our phones while we drive.

Wrong.

Use Bluetooth.

This is nothing new or big. It will be violated just like speeding, not using blinkers, rolling stop at stop signs, etc. But, good to have on the books.

You all are psycho if you think using a hand free system to talk on the phone should be illegal. Honestly insane.

Making phone calls using hand-free devices should be banned too.

This. Absolutely this.

You need to be focused on driving. Not having a conversation. Personally, I don't think cars should even be allowed to have radios, because music is so distracting. But that's a fight for later. Let's get phone use banned first.

Stay off the sidewalk with your car.

That's ridiculous. So what you're saying is people need to be completely unable to communicate with the outside world when they're driving. What if it's an emergency?

It's 2020. The reality is people communicate on the phone while driving. Using a hands-free device is perfectly fine. In fact, most new cars have built-in systems to facilitate it.

Are you saying it will be illegal for me to use the voice command system that Ford built into my car to make phone calls?

No. What I'm saying is, when you're operating a motor vehicle, you should be required to stay off your phone.

Using a hand-free device is not perfectly fine. It's distracted driving.

And it should be illegal for Ford (or any other car manufacturer) to build voice command systems into their vehicles to make phone calls.

Almost every new car has the ability to use voice command to sync with your phone and make calls. Both of ours do...Nissan and Lexus.

Which is why ALL phone use while driving needs to be outlawed.
