The means of making the call is irrelevant. It's that the call is being made at all. That's the source of the distraction, not whether the phone is pressed against your ear or not. A person making a phone call, hands free or not, isn't focused on driving. And that's the issue. Phone use while driving is the problem. That's what needs to be banned. |
If your attention span is so short that you can't drive without some kind of external distraction, then may I suggest you shouldn't be driving at all? |
Spoken like a woman who’s husband does all the driving on long trips. |
| We need sanctuary cities! I know mah rahts! |
| We should ban cars. Every one should be forced to use public transportation or bikes. |
Whoa.... easy there. Small steps. Let's focus on no phones first, m'k? Then no car radios in a couple more years. Then no cars in another decade. Little bites. Little bites. |
Spoken like a misogynist who insults women. |
No, we're people who want to prevent crashes, serious injuries, and deaths from distracted driving. People used to defend drinking and driving the same way. |
+1 Keep the radios, ban the misogynistic fck wads. |
| Radios are going to have to go at some point. |
Really? When was that? What was their defense? |
Here's an article from the LA Times from 1985: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1985-01-26-mn-13688-story.html |
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16884056 It's equivalent to, or worse than, driving drunk. |
Will you outlaw speaking to the passenger or your kids in the backseat as well? How is that any less distracting? |
Both are distracting. However: 1. There is evidence that talking on the cell phone is more distracting. See here, for example: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/0018720817748145 2. The fewer the distractions, the better. 3. It is not realistic to make it illegal to speak to people in the car, but it is realistic to make it illegal to use your cell phone in the car. Seriously, just put the phone away, please. |
