1) I’m down with whoever. But I want a redhead! Is that too much to ask?
2) this girl... isn’t cute. Really odd looking. *im* odd looking! But I’m also not going to be cast as Ariel.

And I don’t have red hair. Which again... is important to the story!

Ariel’s color red does not exist in nature. Hair dye, or a wig, or CGI will probably be used no matter who the actress is. Also, Aborigines have dark skin and red hair. So tell me, what does this actress not having red hair have to do with anything?

Again: you’re ok with a character of color being portrayed by a Caucasian? Sure hope so. Otherwise we’d have to call you a hypocrite.

White people are OVERREPRESENTED in entertainment, politics, education... literally every single sphere of life. So yes it’s fine to sub in a marginalized person for a role that would be YET ANOTHER white character but not okay to TAKE a rare role for a marginalized person and give it to YET ANOTHER white person to become one more in a sea of roles validating white people whole excluding marginalized peoples.

Get it???

This. It’s like when white people complain about black history month because “there’s no white history month.”

I personally would love a true black princess. Let her be an original. Let her represent “us.” I will pass on her being runner up.

The biggest reaction to this casting is the confusion that it is Halle Berry.

EXACTLY. I don't care what race they choose for the Little Mermaid (or any other role, for that matter), but heads would be exploding if the situation was reversed. Outrage and protests!! I'm so sick of the hypocrisy.

Obviously you do care or you wouldn't be trying to insuate hypocrisy where there is none. As another poster has already pointed out, white people are already overrepsented in film, even in roles where the character is a POC. If you recast the 1 and only black Disney princess as a white girl, you're damn right there would be outrage. Casting one of the many white princesses, whose race is inconsequential to the character because she's a fictional half-fish person, is not remotely the same and you know it.

What does Ariel's race have to do with the movie?

Nothing? Then F off.

And so you feel the same way about the ridiculous outcry over Moana costumes being worn by white girls? How about the Aladdin cast not being authentically "Arabic"? It works both ways, doofus.

Colonization did not work both ways. You'll never understand that because you're only thinking of yourself.

For those of us who can think broaden than that, we can be sensitive to history and what it means for today. It's not hard, it's just being kind.

I dunno, kids weren't a part of colonization and maybe we don't need to put it on them.

Agree she is funny looking.

I think it’s her eyebrows so maybe Disney can help her with that

Moana’s costume is traditional in her culture. So, yes, it’s weird for a person outside of that culture to wear the costume without context, especially if they’re darkening their skin, which is really what the uproar was about.

Ariel’s tail is traditional of...a made up mythical creature. So, no, not weird for a person of any ethnicity to wear.

I liked Hamilton because of the juxtaposition of historical figures who were clearly white being represented by minorities through the medium of rap, which originated from black culture. I loved that Black Panther was a movie that provided representation in just about every aspect.

What I don't like is this feeling of shoehorning in diversity. The Little Mermaid isn't real, but Ariel is an intellectual property of Disney who is instantly recognized as a white character with red hair. I could understand if The Little Mermaid was a dead property that no one really remembered, but that's not the case. Unless they're going to go the route of The Wiz and make everyone black, I don't see the point. Make something new.

How is it shoe morning?
MERMAIDS ARE NOT REAL, so how is she “white”
I know plenty of Black people with red hair, naturally grown red hair not out of a box.
I know lots of black people with their complexion and those features and that hair.

Really are there tons of Facebook groups saying don’t make Halle Berry Ariel because they’re tons of them and that say make Ariel white again.

And yes that probably would be some backlash if princess Tiana was changed because we have not had any f****had any d***** princesses !!!!

News flash: Fa Mu Lan was an actual historical person who really lived. Ariel was not an actual historical figure because mermaids are not real.

How about the *actual, historical figures* from Hamilton being portrayed by POC - which they weren't? Any outrage over that?

There was a point being made with Hamilton it was delivered it was satirical it was ironic it was a play on the fact that historical figures of color are often change to be white people.
Some of y’all fools are’s are so damn dumb it is actually unfreaking believable

Hilarious that YOU are calling people dumb. Edit your text. Then stop with the excuses that it’s ok for casting to go your way but not the reverse. Pp had a good point about Hamilton.
I won’t see this movie anyway because it’s live action and not likely to be very good given that. But frankly the reasons you provide sound like justification to scream I AM RIGHT!
