Yes. One of my favorites. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinderella_(2015_Disney_film) |
How about the *actual, historical figures* from Hamilton being portrayed by POC - which they weren't? Any outrage over that?
|
EXACTLY. I don't care what race they choose for the Little Mermaid (or any other role, for that matter), but heads would be exploding if the situation was reversed. Outrage and protests!! I'm so sick of the hypocrisy. https://www.insider.com/aladdin-live-action-new-character-controversy-billy-magnussen-2017-9 https://fortune.com/2017/07/17/disney-aladdin-movie-cast-jasmine-arab/ http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/article/40628728/disney-criticised-for-jasmine-casting-in-new-aladdin |

I haven’t commented but have seen it come up in headlines today.
1) I’m down with whoever. But I want a redhead! Is that too much to ask? 2) this girl... isn’t cute. Really odd looking. *im* odd looking! But I’m also not going to be cast as Ariel. And I don’t have red hair. Which again... is important to the story! |
Ariel’s color red does not exist in nature. Hair dye, or a wig, or CGI will probably be used no matter who the actress is. Also, Aborigines have dark skin and red hair. So tell me, what does this actress not having red hair have to do with anything? |
Again: you’re ok with a character of color being portrayed by a Caucasian? Sure hope so. Otherwise we’d have to call you a hypocrite. -DP |
Tiana’s race is central to her story. Ariel’s is not. This isn’t hard. |
White people are OVERREPRESENTED in entertainment, politics, education... literally every single sphere of life. So yes it’s fine to sub in a marginalized person for a role that would be YET ANOTHER white character but not okay to TAKE a rare role for a marginalized person and give it to YET ANOTHER white person to become one more in a sea of roles validating white people whole excluding marginalized peoples. Get it??? |
Ariel’s red hair is not significant at all. No part of the story ever references it or hinges upon it. |
Spider-Man is licensed by Sony from Marvel. They have to make a Spider-Man movie every ten years or they lose their license under contract. Same applies to Fantastic 4, which is why in the 90s there was a good awful movie released in like two theaters. |
|
Ariel being a mermaid is important to the story. The red hair can be worked around. Malcolm X had red hair. Were you hoping for a natural redhead for the role or a natural WHITE redhead? Maybe they couldn’t find a young natural redhead who could sing. No one complained when people made fan art with Ariana Grande as Ariel to promote her in the role. Not a natural red head. |
| Quite sure that Disney’s costume folks will give her amazing, reddish hair and a very realistic tail ... can’t wait to see it!!! |
This. It’s like when white people complain about black history month because “there’s no white history month.” |
| Wait a minute! Is the love interest guy going to be black too?!? Will everyone be black? |
