Halle Baily being the new Little Mermaid

So? Maybe that’s what mermaids look like. You ever notice a lotta fish have eyes on either side of their heads.

When she smiles, she does look like a convincing Ariel. Other times, though, she's definitely not cute. Wideset eyes might sound like they should be a lovely feature, but they can look strange.

Who do you consider cute and worthy enough to play Ariel, if not this girl?

I have no problem with picking her. I also think she's a strange looking girl.

Bizarre--she looks like a lot of cute black girls. Not sure what's so strange about her look.

NP. I am all about her being Ariel but don't understand willfully acting like you don't know what PP is talking about. Her eyes are set apart much farther than the average human's. It gives her a unique look. One kind of appropriately aquatic honestly. She's a pretty girl, but her facial structure is unique. Which is probably a part of why she is a celebrity as 'uniquely attractive' is a good thing to have on your resume.

PP again. I'm black, and she looks like a lot of cute black girls I know. I don't know about her eyes being wide apart. She doesn't have European features/bone structure though--is that what you think looks strange?

Dp. I’m black as well and she looks similar to black girls I know bc of her style and hair. Her facial features do not resemble the black girls I know. It’s very clear her eyes are set wide apart and that’s what everyone is clearly stating. It adds to her features to some ppl and hinders her features to others. To say that you cannot see that is being willfully blind so you can win an argument. And actually her nose is a European feature more than a black feature. I’m for her being Ariel and I’ll support a black woman in the role but I’m still not blind.

PP here. She looks like plenty of black girls. The singer Brandy has a similar look around the eyes (and also played a Disney princess).

Posters on this site is so critical. Some posters were saying Meghan Markle's eyes are set too close together. Now this girl's eyes are too far apart? She's a pretty, talented girl--who cares about the damn spacing between her eyes?

One is not plenty and Brandy has eyes that are wide apart. That is something that has been said about Brandy her entire career. I don’t care about the spacing but the issue was ppl taking offense that not everyone thinks Halle is cute. You think she’s cute. Fine. Everyone else doesn’t have too. Ppl notice your looks even if you refuse too.

BTW, not everyone who is opposed to the casting is racist. You DCUMers love conflating things.

Are they going to dye her hair red? That's what I care the most about. I think Ariel should be a red head.

I've never heard of her before, but she's adorable. There's something "cartoonish" about her appearance (I don't mean that negatively )that would make her a good fit.

That said, in general I hate remakes and "live" adaptations and probably won't watch this.

As someone with close set eyes, I’m envious of wider spaced eyes. I think they look better than close set.

BTW, not everyone who disagrees with those who are opposed to the casting thinks they're opposed because they're racist. YOU DCUMers (yes you're one too cause you're posting here, duh) love conflating things.

The difference between Halle Baily and the Disney version of the Little Mermaid title character is tiny compared with the difference between the original story's title character and Disney's Ariel.

Right? I thought that, too--in the original fairy tale, the Little Mermaid does not get the prince. He's going to marry someone else, which means that she will DIE. Her sisters bring her a knife to stab him so his blood will restore her tail, but she doesn't do it, and turns into sea foam. Obviously, Disney's Little Mermaid is a VERY different story. So who cares if they make a completely superficial change? There is literally no reason that a mythical character can't have brown skin. Cultures around the world have mermaid myths. And the cartoon version will still exist, for those who prefer it, for whatever reasons.

I think it’s great Disney is changing it up. I never heard of this actress before so I googled her. You should take a minute and listen to her sing alone and with her sister . She is going to make a fantastic Ariel!

The Disney story is still based on that story, not on any other mermaid story. Many of the Disney stories are softened in some way, that doesn't cut the ties to the underlying story.
