Halle Baily being the new Little Mermaid

There was a Little Mermaid cartoon in the 70s or 80s that more closely mirrored the story and the mermaid was blonde. Ariel's look for the Disney version was based on Alyssa Milano except they made so her hair does not have to be red.

That said, I really really dislike the live action trend. The lion King characters look frightening, Aladin does not work as well and I have a feeling The little Mermaid is going to be lacking as well. Sometimes things that are fun as animation, are just plain scary as live action - I’m looking at you, Pumbaa

Funny that you just happened to name only those that are primarily POC in the main roles. What about Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Maleficient (Sleeping Beauty)?

Lion King is about ANIMALS, all ANIMALS. The stuff that happens is more scary with more realistic animals.

The Aladdin thing is just that it's not as good as the animated version. There were complainers about all the movies you cite above, but those are not as recent.

I am willing to suspend judgement (unlike the PP you quoted) about The Little Mermaid until I actually see it. The actress they have chosen has a wonderful voice, so I think she could be great.

When she smiles, she does look like a convincing Ariel. Other times, though, she's definitely not cute. Wideset eyes might sound like they should be a lovely feature, but they can look strange.

Who do you consider cute and worthy enough to play Ariel, if not this girl?

I have no problem with picking her. I also think she's a strange looking girl.

Bizarre--she looks like a lot of cute black girls. Not sure what's so strange about her look.

NP. I am all about her being Ariel but don't understand willfully acting like you don't know what PP is talking about. Her eyes are set apart much farther than the average human's. It gives her a unique look. One kind of appropriately aquatic honestly. She's a pretty girl, but her facial structure is unique. Which is probably a part of why she is a celebrity as 'uniquely attractive' is a good thing to have on your resume.

PP again. I'm black, and she looks like a lot of cute black girls I know. I don't know about her eyes being wide apart. She doesn't have European features/bone structure though--is that what you think looks strange?

Oh give it a rest. Her eyes are a bit disconcerting. Stop turning yourself inside out to find racism where there is none. There is enough in the world without you inventing things so you can brow beat every person you communicate with.

Our kids LOVED the original LK—got all the figures, decorated the kids’ bedrooms, and wore the costumes. We can’t wait for the live action version!

A younger Laverne Cox would be great.

I think she fits the role perfectly because of her eyes are too far apart. Do I think she is attractive? No. And, she doesn’t look like a lot of Black women that I know partially because the eyes far apart look isn’t one that many people have —-white or black. I do think she looks like a tanned version of Jackie Kennedy with the eyes far apart thing going on.

Jackie Kennedy wasn’t a beautiful woman but she was stylish, thin and had poise. All of which carried her far. Jackie knew what traits she had and worked them well enough that people over looked her wide eyes.

+1 I just went to see Frozen the musical and the actress who played Anna that day was black. She was fabulous and got a ton of cheers from the audience.
