How do you feel about it? I think she's beautiful and would definitely play the part well...her voice is unreal. But it's been brought to my attention that many people are offended and believe she should be white? I personally think it's no biggie since it is a fictional character not set in any specific place or time period (Unlike Mulan, Tiana or Princess Jasmine, etc). The significant traits of Ariel is that she's a mermaid and she can sing. Race doesn't matter to me but apparently this is a huge deal and there are petitions being started. Thoughts?

| I've never heard of her before. Obviously she doesn't look anything like the cartoon character, but ... whatever. |
Here we go |
Yep |
| I love it. Ariel is not real. There’s nothing saying she has to be white or red headed. |

Dear Racists,
What does Ariel's race have to do with the movie? Nothing? Then F off. |
| The Little Mermaid is set in Denmark. |
The original fairy tale may have been, but the Disney movie isn’t. Will you also complain that the actress isn’t really a mermaid? |
x100. The Disney movie is set in the Caribbean, probably. I just think it's a shame that they couldn't find a half-fish actress. What does Hollywood have against tails? (Obv, not serious). Wait until the racists find out that Ursula isn't being played by someone purple/gray. No tentacles either.

| Can’t wait! |

I think she’s beautiful and it’s great to have more diverse princesses!
That said, I really really dislike the live action trend. The lion King characters look frightening, Aladin does not work as well and I have a feeling The little Mermaid is going to be lacking as well. Sometimes things that are fun as animation, are just plain scary as live action - I’m looking at you, Pumbaa |
Funny that you just happened to name only those that are primarily POC in the main roles. What about Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Maleficient (Sleeping Beauty)? |
Completely agree with both points. |
I’m not that Pp but honestly those were all boring as f*ck and I regretted taking my kids to see them. |
NP here: So the other thing that Lion King and Aladdin have in common and probably why the poster only mentioned them is that THEY ARE 2019 RELEASES. Maybe that’s the only trend the poster knows. |
