The story of a girl who gives up her voice for a pair of legs in order to snag a man. I was hoping Disney would let this one fade into obscurity.

News flash: Fa Mu Lan was an actual historical person who really lived. Ariel was not an actual historical figure because mermaids are not real.

How about the *actual, historical figures* from Hamilton being portrayed by POC - which they weren't? Any outrage over that?

There was a point being made with Hamilton it was delivered it was satirical it was ironic it was a play on the fact that historical figures of color are often change to be white people.
Some of y’all fools are’s are so damn dumb it is actually unfreaking believable

Hilarious that YOU are calling people dumb. Edit your text. Then stop with the excuses that it’s ok for casting to go your way but not the reverse. Pp had a good point about Hamilton.
I won’t see this movie anyway because it’s live action and not likely to be very good given that. But frankly the reasons you provide sound like justification to scream I AM RIGHT!

DP.

Are you really commanding the PP to "Edit your text"? Who are you to command other people what to do? Slavery and Jim Crow ended a long time ago. Looks like you were born too late.

Captain Marvel was originally a white woman, just like portrayed in the movie. BUT! The second Captain Marvel was Monica Rambeaux, who is probably the daughter of Carol’s best friend in the movie. So she might pick up the name in a sequel.

Sorry, but you have it backwards. The first woman to go by Captain Marvel was Monica Rambeaux. And thats the thing about it, no one cares or even made a big enough fuss for this knowledge to be mainstream. But it is what it is.

Carol came before Monica. And the first Captain Marvel was an alien (a white guy male alien).

Mar-Vel —old white guy/alien
Ms. Marvel —Carol
Captain Marvel —Monica

Thank you to the last poster for proving my point. The first female Captain Marvel was Monica, and no one was outraged when she was portrayed as a white woman in film. Just saying. No one is ever outraged enough to create petitions when the roles are reversed although the God's of Egypt outrage came close, rightfully so.

Same here, I can't wait to hear Halle's rendition of Ariel's songs.

They are all racists there, because they are not cool black dudes speaking English.

She’s lovely and I’m looking forward to it!

Omg, for the past few weeks I thought I was hearing that Halle Berry was the new Little Mermaid. I kept thinking who cares about her race, isn’t she a bit too old!? So glad I opened this thread! I love the new choice.

LOL at all the people BIG MAD about this pretend character not being white.

Beauty and the Beast was horribly disappointing due to Emma Watson’s terrible voice and dull acting. If this new Ariel can sing and act, she can be blue and I’d say great! I am a minority and am totally cool with a black Ariel, though I’d like her to still have long red hair for sentimental reasons.

I thought Melissa McCarthy was rumored to be Ursula?

And FWIW, I enjoyed Aladdin (just saw it yesterday) and Beauty and the Beast. I was reticent to see it but actually enjoyed it. Emma did just fine.

The current Ms. Marvel (in comics and a new TV series) is Kamala Khan, so I wonder if Marvel just didn’t want to confuse current readers? Or maybe it’s a conflict between Marvel films and Marvel TV (why we didn’t see Luke Cage or Jessica Jones in any of the movies).

Monica is in the movie, though. We prob just have to wait to see her grow up.

Lots of black people are born with red hair!!!!!!
Stop talking like Ariel being black means she can’t have red hair!
