I think they'll make it beautifully so. I would love it more if she was going to have the Amazigh type of red hair, but I suspect it'll be straight.

I liked Hamilton because of the juxtaposition of historical figures who were clearly white being represented by minorities through the medium of rap, which originated from black culture. I loved that Black Panther was a movie that provided representation in just about every aspect.

What I don't like is this feeling of shoehorning in diversity. The Little Mermaid isn't real, but Ariel is an intellectual property of Disney who is instantly recognized as a white character with red hair. I could understand if The Little Mermaid was a dead property that no one really remembered, but that's not the case. Unless they're going to go the route of The Wiz and make everyone black, I don't see the point. Make something new.

Wait! It’s a story about a mermaid and a cephalopodish sea witch, but Ariel’s skin and hair color are what prevent you from suspending disbelief?

The Caribbean has been a multiracial society ever since Columbus left some of his crew there. They can set it in the 18th c like POTC and have black, white, indigenous, mixed, and Asian characters without a historian batting an eyelash.

I’m AA and a historian of New World slave societies. If the lobster can have an Afro-Caribbean accent in the original, Ariel can be a mermaid of African descent in this one.

News flash: Fa Mu Lan was an actual historical person who really lived. Ariel was not an actual historical figure because mermaids are not real.

Stop arguing with stupid people.

Disney: We’ve cast a beautiful girl with an amazing voice as a completely mythical creature.

Racists: Mermaid science exists, we can prove why Ariel can’t be black.

Fictional non-white mermaids are not new. Nearly ever maritime culture has a mermaid legend and those outside of Europe didn’t see mermaids as red headed white girls.

Everyone thinks Halle Berry has been cast as 'The Little Mermaid'

I can't be the only person who saw news that "Halle Bailey is The Little Mermaid" and got very confused because my mind misspelled her last name to make it read "Halle Berry is The Little Mermaid," right?

I thought mermaids were blue...

I think it’s great. I also think we have more important things to argue over.

I personally don’t think there is anything wrong with the casting, but I am sure there would be a bigger reaction and a called LARGE boycott if Tiana was casted to a Caucasian. Just my opinion.

The biggest reaction to this casting is the confusion that it is Halle Berry.
