My job at one point involved working with overweight people (not just a couple of pleasingly plump pounds, obese people ) and with some people the folds in their skin often carried an odor if they couldn't wash them properly. The same might go for their private regions. How awful for all of you, in any case.

I was just coming to suggest this exact same thing!

OP-- are they clinically obese (not average overweight)? I also have experience working with people who have trouble cleaning themselves thoroughly at a certain size, as the PP described above. If they have been gaining weight since you first met them, this would also explain why the smell has gotten worse.

It's doubtful that a smell like that would be all over their house and belongings and linger in Op's house after they left.

Another possibility might be that they are smoking something? Smoke absolutely will stink up them and everything in their house, too.

People know what smoke smells like shit and say they smelled like smoke. I guess you've never smelled a really funky person; it gets in their clothes, get in your furniture; they'll get up and their ass smell is still on your couch ! are you crazy are we talk about funky butt, not a pack of Marlboro's .

Just put some baking soda around your house to absorb the smells. It really works! So does boiling vinegar. I like to put it in my crock pot.

Same here. I agree about trying baking soda.

No. I have never smelled anyone quite that bad. Op says she can't quite pinpoint the smell and it's everywhere. I would think that Op would know the difference between unwashed azz smell and an odd/unpleasant odor.

You are lucky!

Medication my Dad was on caused an odor. May be from medication.

Does your DH smell it too?

Older people lose their sense of smell so they can't tell when they stink. They may believe they need to bathe less or change closes less. Have DH let them know that you think they stink and ask them too shower and wear clean clothes daily.

Putting a little Vick's under your nose is honestly the way to go. Nothing will cover up the odor as effectively, and it's not obvious like spritzing the whole house with Febreze constantly. You can even get a little travel-sized thing of Vick's so it's always with you when needed.

I also suspect it's something dental/gums related, based on experience with an aging relative.

What?

1. Douse a scarf in perfume, or better yet an essential oil, and wear that around your neck the whole time as an accessory. I "play" (sniff) with my scarf when I smell something gross.

2. Get a powerful plug-in airfreshener.

3. Spray Febreeze frequently (after they've left the room).

4. Boil some fragrant foods like lemon or apples/spices periodically.

5. Leave a scented body wash in the shower for them to use.

6. Gift them perfume/cologne.

But then there will be a strong perfume-y kind of smell everywhere. And a bad smell mixed with perfume/air freshener scents is even worse than just the unpleasant odor by itself.

What about just keeping a window or two open just a crack while they are in your house? I’d rather smell fresh air than scented air, whether a good or bad smell.

Perfume or air freshener plus bad smell is awful...like a flower field full of dead animals.

Huh?

Yeah, i don't get it either.

You really are so dense that you don't get how deeply offensive it would be if OP were a white woman commenting on "the smell" of her black, or Indian, or Mexican American ILs? Or if OP were an Indian woman commenting on "the smell" of her white or Japanese ILs?

I'm black and if I had a white friend/relative/spouse tell me I smell,I would not be offended , I WOULD WASH MY ASS
Bravo! Not everything is racial. Geez!

I think it is far more racist of those posters who automatically assumed OPs in laws were a minority and called OP racist.

+1 There was nothing in OP's post that would suggest she was a racist. It really bothers me how quickly some people jump to the conclusion that a person must be racist.
