Turn in the non-resident cheaters (Residency Fraud Reporting)

Their ignorance of the English language would have been almost comical if not for the reputational damage to the appointee, who was reinstated by Mayor Williams.

This. Totally remember this!!! Thanks for sharing. Sheds light on a clear misunderstanding of a term in a world of racial paranoia!

It is not the misunderstanding nor it is the definition. It is the the hate behind the words that make them hurtful. George Zimmerman's black friend was all over the news saying how his teenage daughter said the term "goon" in the black community in her high school is a term of endearment. Lil Wayne's raps are often filled with the same words, but do you really think Zimmerman was saying goon referencing Trayvon Martin in an endearing way? Do you still think that after seeing his Myspace page that was filled with racial hate? If you don't get, then you don't get it but please don't try to spin this into a "that's not the definition" discussion.

This thread indeed has taken a strange turn, perhaps in an attempt to equate concern about stealing public education services with racism and therefore to discredit the whole issue.

For the record, I knew of some white children from Maryland who attended a desirable, oversubscribed Ward 3 school. Parents were DC government employees and one had a partial share in a DC property but the family was non-resident in DC. Anecdotally, much of the cheating has involved DC government employees who may use connections to get into particular DCPS schools and/or who like the convenience of favorable before/after school care at favorable cost. It is probably more prevalent among residents who live in PG than MoCo, given the general relative strengths of their public school systems. Bottom line: It is still theft of public services from the taxpayers and of scarce resources from actual DC resident students.

+1. please let's go back to the main issue, and let's just leave the trolls/derogatory-words-using-posters outside. residency fraud in DCPS and DC charters exist, is bad because it robs the most vulnerable and needy kids in our community of a chance to a good education, and it amounts to theft. cheaters come in all colors and from both VA and MD (various counties). the problem has been going on for years, but now is more pressing since there are more and more desirable schools in DC with long waitlists. DCPS has a shameful record of not doing much, DC parents' pressure may be starting to push DCPS and Charters to act. there is a system for reporting suspected cases of cheating (and it does not take a lot of investigating sometimes, if your kids is invited for a playdate at his/her classmate' home and the home is in XYZ, MD or WYZ, VA, it does not take Sherlock Holmes to think that maybe DCPS should verify the residency of that child).

That's the crazy thing. Not one poster has said that cheating is ok. I think everyone agrees to this. As soon as someone points out that a term is derogatory, this crazy lady just says "oh hush, that's because you're a PG cheatin goon yourself".

Yes, there are folks stealing City services but be careful writing down someone's license plate number before you get all the facts. For example, one parent drives his company vehicle and have Virginia plates. Another, was involved in accident and driving a rental car from Maryland. Maybe, I'm jaded, but from school, college and even your place of employment folks use their connections to get the best situation for what they need.

And your point is?... If someone is not cheating, they're off the hook. If they are, bye bye. It's that simple. You don't know unless you investigate an allegation of cheating. Parents are fed up with cheating. I for one would be happy to be investigated. Such investigation would reveal that my Maryland resident dad picks up my DC from school for me on some week days. He drives to my DC home. This would be easy to prove and no trouble at all. I would be cooperative and actually pleased that something is being done.

Only the cheaters are up in arms about this. They traipse over here, while stealing from kids who've been waiting on waitlists that are at historic longs. I want my tax payer dollars to go to the citys' needy children- of which there are many- and not to MD/VA cheaters.

PP here. I was born and raised in DC. Also, an IB resident for the so-called NW upper echelon schools. I don't know your ancestry, but for me, being wrongly investigated to proof to some upset parent that my children belongs to the school they attend is not welcoming. You maybe pure as the driven snow. Good for you. But, there are some parents that are willing to take a chance of getting caught by the Non-resident police, in order their kids get a quality education. In a perfect world, all 4 sections of the city and PG Co. could all have Blue Ribbon performing schools. With no DC CAS cheating, fighting on the playground ( clutch my pearls)! or no OOB kids. If those families that are in viloation get caught, what you have DCPS do to the child? This young person maybe thriving for the first time or a very good friend of your DC. Like what Wash, DC does well, fined the parents and pay a tuition fee( payment plan if needed). Don't kick the child.
I feel strongly about this because , I was one of those kids that had parents that lived in two jurisdictions SE and PG Co. They both agree that I should attend school in DC. I attended Eaton, Deal and Wilson. This is before the whole IB/ OBB thing. I went to college and Med school. Now, I treat kids that have Blue Cross and others that don't know where their next meal is coming from.
Yes, the parents that are circumventing the DCPS residency rules are wrong but you have to understand their predicament. Not everyone is fortunate to walk out their front door and have opportunities afforded to them. Being investigated as you put it, is not something that most people welcome. I drive a SUV with Md tags. My DH owns a company that is in Chevy Chase Md. If I thought you were snooping around my vehicle or getting info my children to find out that I was a resident, then you would have deal with me or MPD. Save your CSI tactics and devote your energy in trying to improve all of DCPS schools such as tutoring or mentoring.

I call Shenanigans.

I simply cannot believe you could have gotten all the way through Med School with such atrocious syntax, grammar, spelling, and rhetorical style. The mental discipline required to have completed that amount of education and training is entirely at odds with that which is displayed in the post above. That's not even delving into your fuzzy logic. It too, is completely contraindicated by the fact that an individual with a medical degree, would have needed to get through chemistry successfully at the college level to even be accepted into med school, much less complete it. Chemistry is a precise and logical science, your post is anything but.

You are lying.

And please let's not try to spin (and attempt to discredit) the genuine concern and outrage about DCPS residency scamming as some kind of racist "hating." Do you know who is most dis-served and cheated by the blatant theft of services by non-residents? The kids in failing schools who lose out in the OOB lottery and whose parents can't use DC government insider connections to game the system. The kids in schools with poor heating in the winter or no air conditioning in the sweltering months or whose school libraries don't have books. The kids who have no science class or no math tutor because there are no funds. Every non-resident, non-tuition paying kid from Prince Georges or Prince William or Prince Wherever takes a school slot or diverts school funding from a place where it could be better purposed to serve a real DC student. It's the kids in poorer wards of the city who are really being hurt by this, not so much the kids in Spring Valley or Georgetown.

If you are truly resident in DC and drive an SUV that is registerd in Maryland, then I would be very happy to see MPD deal with you.

The educated OP used Punk Goon. I don't know how referring the residents of PG County as Punk Goons has anything to do with residency fraud. Did she say it because those were the only "p'" and "g" words she could think of? Maybe? I am a 53 year old African American Army vet. 82nd Airborne Division 1-325 A.I.R D Co. AT-1 Operation Iraqi Freedom. My wife told me about the OP using the word "goon". I was born in South Carolina and spent much my adult life in the Army. The word goon is racist. A white soldier would use it in derogatory terms referring to a black soldier. In the South, it was used to describe black males. From what I have read, some civilians are trying to validate it by saying it means this or AA's are making a big deal about it. We are making it an issue because some people didn't realize it was such a vile word to African Americans. This is not to say resident fraud is not a problem. But folks on this site know the demographics of this region. When a Black poster after black poster informs and educate people about why it was a bad choice of words, it still seems to me that some refuse to accept it. If you are gay, Jewish, Latino, Physically Challenged or a woman and someone said something offensive, I would hope you try to informed that person, that what they said was demeaning and wrong.

NP here. This thread is from bizarro-world.

First of all, the name-calling should be beneath an adult.

Secondly, the speculation about someone else's sex life is truly bizarre. I can't fathom what brought that PP to even go down that road.

Third, the level of emotion here is entirely disproportionate to that which is reasonable for a discussion. If you get this out-of-control over address cheating, I can't imagine what effect getting cut-off in traffic may have. (Or having the grocery store run out of organic milk, or getting a stain on your blouse, or when your dentist appointment has to be rescheduled, or, or, or....) If this is the kind of issue to elicit so much anger, then your life is going to be long and hard, even though you'll probably die early of a heart attack.

1,000,000 Ditto

No one is saying cheating is right. Some are more sympathetic than others. I don't have a problem with that. The problem is when someone tells you that Punk Goon is a term of endearment.

In the minds of most, I doubt there's an association between goons and race.

Spielberg agrees.

No one should be excusing cheating. It's a bit much when someone says "the parents are only trying to get the best for their kids" and cites the poor quality of some PG county schools as justification for DCPS scamming. This is especially the case when the county's electorate for so long looked the other way at (and voted for) Jack Johnson and his livin' large, play-to-pay poltical culture that so fu#5@d the county up. At least the new county exec is trying to move in a different direction.

Are you really minimizing this gracious gentlemen's story and feelings on the matter? Geesh people. Be real. The OP was referring to the deadbeat dad and other PGers (who no doubt are being painted as black) as goons. Blacks are telling you that they feel that word is derogatory, yet you continue to use off-handed, non-related reasons to justify the use of the word. II heard you discussing cheating PG kids as goons in person, I would be highly offended and would give you a piece of my mind. If you still feel like it's ok to use the word because Spielberg made a movie called "Goonies", then please, start using the word verbally in person with more people around and not just in writing.

How the sex life comments got started...
If you're not "playing investigator" then why in the heck are you getting information from the grandma about the DC dad being unemployed? Whatever. I call BS. Call me what you want, but you're the ignorant one. I am far from racist. I am married to a black man and have black kids. It's nosey, racist people like you that have no business stereotyping this poor kid's situation. I am all for catching the cheating parents that are stealing from the system. Report the issue and let it be. There is no reason you should know as much information as you do on this story. Face it, you are a gossip-whore and one of those moms at school that I despise. It’s probably because of your poor sex life. Go watch Bachelor, gossip at a PTA meeting or get your kicks somewhere else. You are pathetic.

Do you feel better now because you're not the one who started it, just the one that continued it page after page? You sound like my 7 year old. He started it mom, she called me a name first.
