DC Public and Public Charter Schools
The poster knew exactly what he/she was typing. |
Yeah, but according to DCUM, every white person i DC is upper middle-class, educated, reliable on the go individuals. And, every black person, with an exception of a few, are well FARMS, uneducated, dead beat parents who are uninterested with their children's education. Please don't pretend that you have not noticed that about DCUM responders. |
You lost the bet- they're Monster Goons! |
| To me, a goon is a Polish or Russian guy who plays hockey and is usually the dude that gets into fights and acts as the "enforcer." |
GZimmerman was the exact reflection. When everyone thought he said "coon" on the phone with police and he comes out and says "no, I didn't say that, I said goon" every black person grimaced. It doesn't matter what the dictionary or origination of a word is, when you say it with a certain intent to speak of a group of kids, you can't deny it has racial undertones. We all know where the term "ghetto" originated from, but when DCUMers say those "ghetto kids" we know they are saying it with hate. |
| Because you're all excited from potentially being caught residency cheating, you're drumming up a "bunch of malarkey". No one on here except PG cheaters are associating "goon" with black people. Just stop it!! Chose another group to pick on!!!! |
False! Think what you want. I am a tax-paying DC resident that thinks all cheaters should be prosecuted and expelled from school regardless of the sad story behind the cheating. However, I do take extreme offense when I hear people being referred to as "greasy trolls, ghouls, goblins, and goons". |
This thread indeed has taken a strange turn, perhaps in an attempt to equate concern about stealing public education services with racism and therefore to discredit the whole issue. For the record, I knew of some white children from Maryland who attended a desirable, oversubscribed Ward 3 school. Parents were DC government employees and one had a partial share in a DC property but the family was non-resident in DC. Anecdotally, much of the cheating has involved DC government employees who may use connections to get into particular DCPS schools and/or who like the convenience of favorable before/after school care at favorable cost. It is probably more prevalent among residents who live in PG than MoCo, given the general relative strengths of their public school systems. Bottom line: It is still theft of public services from the taxpayers and of scarce resources from actual DC resident students. |
Let me help some folks out. If you are using a dictionary to validate the use and context of a word, then you are missing the point. The OP referred to people from Prince Georges County as goons. IF YOU DIDN'T KNOW, IT IS INSULTING TO AFRICAN AMERICANS ESPECIALLY AFRICAN AMERICAN MEN! Don't believe me? Go up to a Black male co worker and call him a "goon". I'll wait. That is just plain wrong. For someone to tell someone else what is hurtful and not takes a lot of nerve. It may be ignorance or a sense of entitlement but don't pretend you are looking out for the kids. Just say it. If you are on school( A )waiting list and you think a kid from Md or Va taking your DC's spot, then say it. Don't act like you give a damn about what happens at Orr, Simmon, or Randle Highlands Elementary, etc. Because you are frustrated with the system, it doesn't give you the right to say a racist statement. Trust me, worse have been said on DCUM. You can claim ignorance, arrogance or the AA's are pulling the race card. But, if someone tells you that you said something hurtful, you need to take heed. I'm sure your comeback will be something like " you are protecting the cheaters or I'm a taxpayer". I'm quite sure I have been paying taxes in DC a little longer than you ( just a guest). But that doesn't give me the right to use derogatory names to a community. |
Don't you think that if you went up to any co-worker of any hue or stripe and called the person a "goon," (assuming you weren't in the habit of ribbing each other), he/she might take offense or at least think you were a bit strange? I don't think this is particular to black males. |
My comeback is... Stop whining! A goon is not a racial slur for black people. Maybe it is under your rock somewhere, but in the rest of the world it's a simpleton wiseguy. Sorry, you so desperately want it to slur AAs, but it doesn't. It does, however, draw focus away from cheaters. Anyone "hurt" by the term needs to get a backbone and ask himself why. |

I do think in DC and environs people are on hair-trigger to take offense at any perceived racial slight.
A notable example was about 10 years ago when a member of the Williams administration was fired because in a meeting he bemoaned a budget allocation as "niggardly." Some DC government employees at the meeting accused him of using the n-word and took great offense. Their ignorance of the English language would have been almost comical if not for the reputational damage to the appointee, who was reinstated by Mayor Williams. |
+1000. Thank you. |
This. Totally remember this!!! Thanks for sharing. Sheds light on a clear misunderstanding of a term in a world of racial paranoia! |
+1. please let's go back to the main issue, and let's just leave the trolls/derogatory-words-using-posters outside. residency fraud in DCPS and DC charters exist, is bad because it robs the most vulnerable and needy kids in our community of a chance to a good education, and it amounts to theft. cheaters come in all colors and from both VA and MD (various counties). the problem has been going on for years, but now is more pressing since there are more and more desirable schools in DC with long waitlists. DCPS has a shameful record of not doing much, DC parents' pressure may be starting to push DCPS and Charters to act. there is a system for reporting suspected cases of cheating (and it does not take a lot of investigating sometimes, if your kids is invited for a playdate at his/her classmate' home and the home is in XYZ, MD or WYZ, VA, it does not take Sherlock Holmes to think that maybe DCPS should verify the residency of that child). |
