Son's Birthday Sleepover

Haven’t read whole thread but DH’s mom asked this with new friends if DH was invited over growing up in NoVa.

What is the big deal? Just say yes and they are locked up. Done.

Accidental children’s death by firearm is a real thing and happens more than you think. It’s a totally legit question. It was in the questionnaire at my kids pediatrician office fir well child visits if there were guns in the house.

DH is a federal LEO, so we have guns in the house. I ask about gun ownership/storage before letting our kids go anywhere and I have no problem being asked how we store our guns.

Your husband sounds really unstable if he can’t handle a simple conversation about guns. And that’s exactly the kind of hothead who should not have guns.

I guarantee this mom isn’t secretly plotting to steal his guns. This level of paranoia and willingness to trample boundaries is very problematic.

I feel sorry for your son.

Correct answer.

Why not just tell her that you do own guns and that they are stored unloaded in a locked safe, separate from ammunition, or in a biometric safe?

OP here. DH basically feels like she is calling him an idiot by supposing he'd have loaded guns lying around. Some of them are worth a large some of money and he doesn't want it known that the 'Jones family' has several thousand dollars worth of guns in our house. He noted that she didn't ask about illegal or prescription drugs, dangerous dogs, swimming pool, alcohol or any other factor also known to kill kids. It feels 'virtue signally' at his expense. It's hard to not consider that viewpoint.

This is SO bizarre. Why have guns at all if owning them makes your home MORE likely to be burglarized?

It might make you more likely to be burglarized but it makes a home invasion dramatically safer. The #1 thing a burglar is most scared of is being confronted by an armed home owner. Most of them will leave if they realize somebody is home to avoid finding out if they have a gun.

There is no reason to be disclosing the presence (or absence) of any valuables in your home to people you barely know. Alot of robberies are loose acquaintances

Anybody who is irresponsible enough to have guns lying around with kids will lie to your face. Don't waste your breath.

They're not hiding anything. In fact, they openly stated that they own several guns worth several thousand dollars. They are refusing to share private information with strangers. Try and keep up.

But there is no why. The guns are stored safely. End of story.

The mom is just some left wing loonie that wants to politicize everything. I feel bad for her kid. He's going to miss a party and end up on the outside of this friend group.

No, it does not sound safe at all.

How are unloaded guns, stored in safes, separate from any ammunition unsafe?

We'll wait.

Exactly. It's not the guns, which actually sound securely stored. The attitudes of OP and her husband are seriously offputting and I wouldn't trust my child with them.

Why are gun nutters so defensive? If the guns are stored safely just say so. OP’s family sound irresponsible.

Guns are a commonly stolen item in burglaries.

I had my house broken into and all the couch cushions were pulled off. They were looking for guns. Gangsters stash loaded guns in the couch for easy access.

So you think OP's son's friend's mother is going to steal the guns?

Personally? I think it's to spread talk to others about the OP having guns. That's why I wouldn't respond. For some people, they exist to stir the pot.

100%

I guarantee the lady thinks this is a way to ostracize someone she feels isn't a Democrat.

Actually OP has shared this private information with strangers--all of us. She refuses to disclose to her son's friend's mother. Seems totally ass backwards to me, but I guess that's one less goody bag she'll have to buy.

DP, but, no. I think the kid would excitedly tell his drunken, derelict uncle about them who would burglarize the home a month or two later with some of his degenerate friends. This is how things go down in the real world.

Who remembers the Savopoulos murders?

Ex employee tried to rob his old boss and killed the whole family when it went sideways.

Only a complete fool thinks we live in a safe world. Never let your guard down.
