Why? Because of the guns or because of the politics?

The guns, the danger

Why not respond with the truth? Personally I’d say no to anyone I did not know well.

OP, the worst thing is: you can't even imagine -the why- of someone asking this

Do you tell the parents of your kid's friends how all of your jewelry is stored and what the value is?

No one is asking how much OP's guns are worth.

And yet, thieves still care. Funny how that works.

No one has been killed by diamond earrings.

How about steak knives? Do you ask your kid's friend's parents if they lock those up? Garden shears? Axes? Rope?

Seriously? You don’t see the difference? I can’t even.

Op I’m not a gun owner but would be totally fine with a “they’re locked up with no access to the kids” answer

I do, but I don’t leave and I watch my kid like a hawk

Why not just tell her that you do own guns and that they are stored unloaded in a locked safe, separate from ammunition, or in a biometric safe?

+1
I applaud this parent for having the courage to ask you about this important topic. Be prepared for her kid not to come.

I hope she tells all the other parents and none of the kids come.

Me, too. I feel bad for the birthday boy though.

More likely that at least one of the dozen boys is going to wet the bed. You know they are all going to drink copious amounts of soda. Best of luck to you.

I wouldn't respond

I think the way she declined without actually knowing is weird.
I am a liberal in general but own a gun. It’s locked in a safe in my bedroom.
If someone asked I would tell them that.
I’d be honest. “ DH does own guns, they’re locked in a safe, we understand if Jeremy can’t come, just let us know”

Do you ask everyone?
I guarantee youd never know I own one unless u asked.

If your family owns guns, you shouldn’t act like you’re ashamed of it. You need to answer honestly and it doesn’t have to be in a huge amount of detail, but lying would absolutely be the worst thing you could do. Something like;

Hi X, yes we have guns that are locked away either in biometric safe or safe that requires a code. Happy to chat if helpful. We also would understand if this means that Johnny is not able to come for the sleepover. Hope he can join for some portion of the evening.

I grew up in an area where hunting was common as were shooting sports. I would say yes (presumably your kid knows about the hunting) and they are locked up and could add that the kids won't be in rooms where they are kept.

30-40 % of American households have guns. Your kids have been in houses with guns - you should be talking about safety with them.
